The dealer i got my k6 from did the first service early as part of the purchase.
(Bike was ex demo and had 336 miles on the clock). This week i hit 600, should i bother gettin another "first service" or will it be fine till the next ones due? ( thats 1 year or 4000 miles if i remember right?)

Change the oil and check over for loose bolts and stuff, won't hurt it.

It's a bit ****ing no no. Car oil has additives in to reduce friction - your bikes clutch sits in this oil so it would just slip all over the place. I find there's normally only one grade of bike oil for sale in bike shops anyway. Easy, the one with the bike on it.

Totally no need to change the oil yet unless you can afford to. Oil will last alot longer than 300miles!
Bolt check it all over though. Routine checks really that every bike owner should do every few weeks really. |

I thought the reason for changing the oil was that there is a chance that the engine isn't fully run in yet, having only completed half its standard run in period?

Car oil vs bike oil. Again.
I think it works, have proven it doesn't cause clutch slip, some people with access to the tribology lab at my uni have proven it holds viscosity just as well. Blah blah but I still would say use bike oil for peace of mind and warranty. The idea of changing oil after the running in period is because this first bit of the engines life produces a lot of fine particulate (more than at any other time) and the oil filter won't catch this fine stuff. Either way an oil change won't hurt, and its only about a tenner.

The run in period!. Ok mainly the aim of this period is to bed the bike in. Allow components to settle down effectively without any tech jargon here!.
The bike will actually bed in better if you stick to the schedule and use it!. Changing the oil now wont make any difference at all as its already been done. The first service is actually 600miles or 2mths whichever is sooner. So it isnt strictly mileage critical. Just ensure you get the engine warmed up properly before riding, dont labour the engine at low revs in a high gear either. You need the rings to seal to the bore properly so just warm it up and ride. Enjoy! |
