my 10 year old (small) son is going to give going pillion a go. he has his big sisters old textile stuff, cat boots, gloves and her helmet. unfortunately helmet is a bit tight. will do for first time out, but if he enjoys it will need to get him his own helmet. Unfortunately most helmets are quite heavy and his head is big 57 cm. are there any makes that are a bit lighter ?

57cm, that's a adults small to medium isn't it?
Arashi Typhoon were meant to be the lightest but I think Arashi went out of business. Weights of various helmets in the link, looks like most full face helmets are roughly 1400-1500g. My Roof one is up there. Save up £850 the BMW carbon fibre one. ![]() http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcyc...et-weights.htm |

HJC HQ-1 is pretty light, rrp of ~£250 is a bit less than the BMW one too, even if it's substantially heavier
![]() haven't used mine much but it's noticably light compared to other helmets in the hand, and the naked carbon fibre thing looks cool they call it the AC-12 on that site though http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motor...et/hjc/carbon/ |

bit expensive. I dont even pay that much for my helmet. He will be going out occassionally and I cant afford to pay much. Ill just need to try and build up his neck muscles bless him. He put daughters helmet on yesterday and it was wider than his shoulders. Hopefully will look better when he has his jacket on. lol

I dont know their safety record but X-lites might be worth a go. I know HG stock them and they are reasonable priced. Get a last years paint job and you could save even more dollar.

Missus has an Arai Astro Light in XXS size (51-52cm), it's very, very light (according to the sticker, 1.2 kg). Suspect the shell size is as important as the actual weight, with a big shell size you (a) look like a mushroom head, and (b) the weight is distributed further from your neck, making it feel and act a lot heavier. Bit pricey for an occasional kid's lid though (although at least with an Arai you can get them refitted up to a point, so may last a couple of years).

My 7 year old would be interested in going. Is there a minimum legal age? Or what age would you recommend starting?

I'm pretty sure there's no minimum legal age, just the stipulation that they must be able to reach the pillion pegs.
