Should the Police pay award be back dated to 1st September.
Last years pay award was awarded on 1st Sept 2006, however this year neither side could reach an agreement and it went to "binding" arbitration. Arbitration came up with a 2.5% award, to be backdated to 1st Sept, however the home secretary no longer wished to be bound by what she agreed to when entering the "binding" arbitration, and will only award the rise from 1st December. Meanwhile, officers based in Scotland will get the award backdated as their government will be bound by this "binding" arbitration. I for one couldn't give a stuff about the £200 I'm losing out on, it's the general principal I'm upset about. Both parties entered the arbitration process knowing it was "binding", yet the home secretary wants to do her own thing, why didn't she just "impose" whatever award she wanted and be done with it. |

Isnt that the point of being in Govt tho?
You can say what you like to convince the otherside to enter into negaotiations with you.....knowing full well you'bve left the back door open for yourself to sneak out of it it doesnt all go your way. What a suprise eh? ![]()

Pretty sickening really, unless i've missed some significant part of it... That's kind of the entire point of arbitration. Move to scotland, we have better roads, better police pay, better drink, and a drastically reduced risk of contracting skin cancer.

I'm a believer in a well trained, well drilled, physically fit police force where commonsense prevails. Thing is, we aint got one.
Why should the Police be paid more anyway, never mind talk of backdating a pay award. |

The annual pay rise in line with the rate of inflation was due on 1st Sept, however due to the fact that it went to arbitration it took until begining of december until agreement was reached.
For the last 30 years, Police have received their annual inflation increase on 1st Sept, the whole idea of backdating it is nothing more than giving a pay rise 12 months afterthe last one was awarded. |

Too damn right it should be backdated. It's not just about the money - it's the principle. The problem is the public purse in nigh on bankrupt causing all the public services to go to the dogs - including the military. Pandora's chest is empty - it's contents have been spat out all over Iraq and Afghanistan - all that's left is hope, and even that is evidently being wittled away at the edges. This sort of 'deal' makes me seeth with rage mainly because there's nothing anyone can do to address an obvious wrong. With our measly portion of hope remaining in the palm of our hands we pray that the wrong doers finally get an attack of conscience (sp?) and give people not only what they deserved but what's been promised.
We can all moan about how the police don't do their job, it's this and it's that blah blah etc etc but I'll tell you what - if someone dies it'll be a copper knocking on my door with the news, if my house gets burgled I'll be calling old bill, I'll bring my kids up to respect the police no matter how contreversial some of them are. Controversy walks many paths, not just those of the thin blue line. 1st of September was the agreement. Somebody somewhere has cocked up big time and should take a hike - bet their pay rise isn't delayed/reduced/f***ed around with. Nobs. End of rant. ![]()

Typical backsliding, two faced politicians. Those coppers on protection duty with Gordy and co should have a word while showing them how their gun works. Just wait the damn politicians come to vote on their payrise, cost of living rise? no we deserve more...... and backdated as far as we can.... GITS!

Totally agree with Graeme, its not the actual rise that is getting everyone's back up after all its about a days work (double bubble) but its the principal. Where is the fairness in Scottish cops getting a larger increase than us in England & Wales? Graeme I dont know about Durham but where I am, morale couldnt be any lower. We are parading on 4-6 cops on shift to cover the south of the city (over 120,000 people), we are losing cops on shift and not getting them replaced whilst there are new PCSO's seemingly appearing on the community teams every week. There seems to be people sitting carrying out jobs for stats purposes who could be utilised as resources and all the time the HUMAN RIGHTS ACT lingers over us while we try to put people before the courts.
I increasingly find myself doing pointless repetitive paperwork which is preventing me from locking up the miscreants of our society. I dont like to be negative when I'm at work but my frustrations are no better hidden. All we ask for is that the government give us a fair crack of the whip. |
