Default Letter from solicitor regarding accident in 2004

Some will know that I had a rather serious accident back in 2004.

There was no other vehicle involved in the accident. But I have just received a letter from a solicitor looking for 'expenses arising from the collision' from the Motor Insurers Bureau for nearly £2500.

It goes on to state. At the time of the above collision you failed to identify to your insurers, as a result the claim was referred to the Motor Insurers Bureau to deal with, who are a national guarantee fund, with a responsibility for compensating the victims of negligent uninsured motorists. You are liable to reimburse our client for the expenses arising from the collision that have been paid on your behalf.

What does that mean The only thing I can think of is the ride to the hospital. As I have stated, there was no one else involved. I had my own accident hitting nothing other than a barrier. My bike was picked up a few days after the accident by a friend from the police. So there are no storage fees or anything.

Is it possible some unknown person has come forward stating I damaged their vehicle in some way or another? How come it's taken anyone 3 and half years to contact me

Surely there's some sort of time limitation on these sorts of things. Do you think it could be someone trying it on? Expect someone knowledeable will be along shortly....and who's the 'motor insurers bureau'?

Sounds like someone trying it on. Tell them where to go.

Question: If you were insured, why is the MIB involved at all? Even if an unexpected cost had arisen, it's for your insurer to deal with, nothing to do with you.

I wouldn't even entertain them with a reply, if i understand the letter correctly it appears the solicitor is claiming to be representing the MIB, i would contact the MIB and ask them if they know anything about it

What solicitors is the letter supposedly from?

I've checked the solicitors on the web and they do exist. I didn't tell my insurers as I was only third party at the time and as I said, there was no third party involved. They have given me 14 days to pay. Grrrrr

Nice Christmas present that is. I shall give them a call on Monday as they obviously don't work Saturdays.

Could it have anything to do with those criminal barriers Simon? You didn't have the poor manners tpo do a litttle damage to that in return did you? Just guessing here.

Other than that I pray it can all be sorted without any cost to yourself.

As I understand it, the Motor Insuance Bureau deal with payouts to people who have suffered losses where the other parties responsible are uninsured or not traced. Could this could be a local authority/road maintainer trying to recoup expenses after your trip under the Armco? Give them the name of your insurer at the time and the policy number. That's what compulsory third party insurance is about.

The third party might have been the barrier.... and ambulance rides are chargeable too, and whoever recovered it for the police etc. I had to pay £110 for an ambulance once cos there were 4 people in the car grrrrrrr! I'd have made them walk if I'd known.

Hope you sort it out.

That would be probably about right. That damn barrier nearly killed me. OK my riding nearly killed me, but the barrier definitely tried to ensure I died. Having to pay to have it replaced would indeed be ironic.
