Default Braking: Car versus Bike

Need to settle an argument: I'm of the opinion that the 'average' bike...lets say 600cc plus and not a cruiser/chopper can outbrake the average car, ie not a Porsche GT or something like that. A 2 litre Mondeo, something along those lines.

My friend reckons the car can stop quicker due to its ABS, more grip/contact area on the tyres etc etc. I say the ton of car will stop slower then the 200kg of bike.

Whaddya reckon fellas?

The car is less likely to throw you over the front if you snatch a brake, but I'd definitely say a bike- the one million (literal figure) amount of emergency stops I had to do getting ever closer to the instructor as he held his hand up is testament to that, stopped in what seemed like an instant.

I went flying over the front doing an emergency stop the day before my test, and that was braking in the wet as though it was dry. Another lesson learned the hard way!

The dvla reckon car. Theory test question you can get asked answer this one (according to them).

I think its a hard question to answer because your trying to brand a lot of cars together. If you go for an american muscle car then it wouldn't stand a chance with its drum brakes, at the same time if you choose a very sporty car with front and back discs then the car has a very good chance. Less skill involved in stopping a car generally too.

0-100-0 test. TWO magazine did a few tests car vs bikes and found the following:

A1 GP racing car – 8.4 seconds

Bugatti Veyron – 9.9 seconds

Suzuki GSX-R1000 – 10.7 seconds

Porsche 911 Turbo – 12.50 seconds

Honda CBF1000F – 13.2 seconds

Nissan 350Z – 18.8 seconds
I think bikes win overall because normal people in real life can afford a gsxr thou, whereas most of us can't afford an 800,000 pound veyron...

Braking is for pussies.

Only a tin can driver comes up wi ****e like that. Boasting about how slow ye can go.

Yor granny can lock up the front in a motor for fun! Unskilled bottle merchants.

I remember fastbikes testing a 3k GS500E skanky bag of spanners against some fancy-dan Scooby. Horsed it everywhere.

The acceleration of the majority of bikes and the choice of lines on the road makes braking irrelevant compared to any hot car i my experience.

So in answer to your question, erm............?

I saw a programe on the telly a while back - think it was Fifth Gear or something. Anyway the presenter took a Honfa Civic type R on a track to race James Toseland on a Fireblade.

Obviosly the bike won left him for dead coming off bends into the straights, but the civic was right up his bum into bends cos it could break must later.
