Default Police Warning

O.k so i'm wondering, do we (bikers in general) have some sort of warning signal we give to other bikers to alert them to a police presence further down the road for instance?

I have seen several different examples including my mate doing some sort of finger in the air spinning thing which i took to mean to a u-turn, but i think it was supposed to be a spiren spinning round??

Another was some chap doing the Peter Kay "You've left your lights on!" impression.

Just thought if we all had one universal signal it would make things a lot easier....

If you get caught, warning other road users, you can be done for "perverting the course of justice"....................so don't get caught

+1.

Either that, or flash lights (if it's a car oncoming). Or as one person witnessed last Sunday, if I know they're hidden from view of the plod, I'll use hazard lights too.

Good point, wasn't there a bloke who got done for this a while back?

I tend to wave frantically - this I'm hoping translates to the recipient as "something's wrong, somethings dangling off your bike, there's a big tractor round the next bend, there's someone lurking with a laser gun behind the bushes" etc. Either way, they hopefully slow down. And if caught "warning other road users" then I suppose you can use the defence that it's common practice for bikers to nod or give a small wave as they pass, the energy put into that wave and whether it could be considered a warning or a greeting is purely a subjective issue your honour

And how are they going to prove you were warning them about the police? You could have been advising them of a hazard.

We're always extrememly grateful to the cage drivers who warn us of problems ahead, and lots do

I have seen some bikers open and close there hand just on top of there lid to show the police are about so it looks like a flashing light.

Generally, I use a variant on the old "slow down" hand signal, up and down at the side but often with my left hand.

However, I feel morally obliged to point out that if you ride in such a way as to need to rely in these sorts of warnings to stay out of trouble, then perhaps you ought to think about changing your riding!!! That's fair, isn't it Officer?
