Default Honda NC30s

How much of a bitch are those things to work on?

Got a mate's in at the moment for a full service having been sat for 5 years without starting. Naturally the carbs had to come off for a complete strip and cleanout. Getting them off was no problem, but putting the bloody things back on took the best part of 2 sodding hours. While they were off I did the valve clearances, which means stripping the top radiator off as well. I was going to teach my housemate's 8 year old to do the front ones, because a normal sized fella like me can't easily get in there.

I know bikes are getting more compactly built, but this thing takes the p1ss.

Tomorrow's jobs include stripping the rear caliper and replacing both fork seals - art least that's normal work that I don't need ET's fingers for.

Just he thought of working on one was enough to make me buy the ZXR400 instead...ok the price of the plugs then didn't help

It's character building though

Morning all.

When I was down South I used to do a lot of NC30's & 35's, & they are a touch fiddly to say the least, but compared to some of the modern sports bikes they seem pretty easy these days!

I found that when adjusting the valve clearances it's just as easy to remove the camshaft, thereby gaining pretty easy access to the followers & the shims. Otherwise one has to stuff rags all over the place to prevent a shim falling into the works should you drop one.

Carburettor balancing, as on all VFR's takes a little practise, & without the right tool will usually result in burnt hands!

Cheers.

Interesting thread.

I've been offered one cheap from a friend as I'm after a track bike. Good idea or bad idea?

Morning all.

They can make a good track bike for the shorter twisty tracks, but have a spare regulator to hand as they tend to eat them when thrashed!

Cheers.

I had an NC30 come past me yesterday; gawd did it sound great It was on my top 3 list of bikes to get when I passed my test (glad I didnt get one, the SV is much better suited to my needs).

Honda V4's may be allegedly the greatest engines ever built, but - like french cars - they are a mechanics nightmare

Mind you, my dad had a load of faffing when he changed the spark plugs on my uncles old ZX6r, the fram spars get in the way of the outer two sparkplugs, its a fiddly one to work around
