Hi,
This is my second season with this bike and now it sounds like it has a rod bearing out according to my dealer here in town. So i dont think im going to fix it but just sell it as is. My question to all of you is what do you think that things worth? It is a 2000 SV650 Naked. It has roughly 16000 miles on it and it in pretty good shape short of a pretty good dent on the left side of the tank and some scratches etc. Its probably a 7 out of 10. I have added some aftermarket parts like a Thrust Company Stage one kit, bar end mirrors, color matched small blinkers in the front and integrated signals in the tail light and of course i just put a new pilot power on the back like 500 miles ago. I was thinking about ebaying it but had no idea what to ask or expect. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

How much is it going to cost to fix the rod bearing? If not you're limiting your options to people with vans, you'd get much more for it in good nick.

Is it small or big end do you know?
First things first check for stupid stuff like low idling, that makes allsorts of wierd noises. Camchains can slap around if the tensioners are gone. No need to jump to catastrophic conclusions.... If it's definately serious see if you can figure out if it sounds more from the front or the rear... small end bearings don't tend to sound like a knock so much as big end but pulling one of the heads and barrels off will let you know whether it's small or big end by wiggling the conrods about. If it is big-end then you'll need to pull it in bits, total strip down AFAIK ... I don't believe you can get the rods off to replace the shells with the engine in situ... if indeed it's worth bothering as if the crank is scored then there are no undersize shells available so no chance of regrinding it. If you don't do your own work then just get another engine from ebay and have it fitted. You won't get much for it like that... the crank is the most expensive part to fix, I would give 500 for it max. |

Alternatively you'll get more if you break the whole bike for parts I would have thought.

Yup but then you have to do all the work of stripping it.

Erm... I guess we are talking £. He is from US guessing from the spelling... Color.
Id say change the engine out... If you are sure its the big end. If its any other bits fix it yourself ![]() |

Get a spare engine and swap them over is the quickiest and easiest method, or even make one good engine out of two depending on your skill or availability or a willing mechanic. You need to properly diagnose the problem though, could just cost pennies/cents to fix.

Thanks for all your help. I have been looking for motors but haven't found a decent deal yet. If i can't find anything i think i may have is sold for $1200 which wouldn't be so bad. I believe this problem was caused by too long of wheelies. If i do find a used motor is there a way to set it up so this wont happen again while riding longer wheelies? I have heard you can buy some sort of oil squirters for some bikes in order to prevent this.
