Default tyres and a bit of therapy

Hi orgs...

i had my first puncture 'ever' on the bike, i was coming back from plymouth to dorchester when the lane opened up into two, i overtook and had a slight lean but the bike felt 'wrong' like the back kicked out a bit, at first thought it was slippery, then it started to feel like riding on jelly, stopped and air was gushing out of rear tyre, i rode to garage and pumped up and kept stopping at garages, form charmouth to dorchester (about 20 miles) no one knew where a tyre place for bikes was, i just took my time to get home.... all those cars overtaking...(gggrrrr)

i am glad that happened, as i had a fear of getting puncture at speed, i was doin around 70 when it happened....

now i need new tyres anyway (just starting to square off), they are dunlops, i want something different, any tips, i read bike mag a lot and they seen to recommend bridgestones a lot....

its been a funny 2 days yesterday as i was riding to plymouth, i kept thinking about that orger, teejay dying and was ultra paranoid yesterday during my ride down (i did not know him, but he was 51, for some reason i imagine young ones dying, not people with experience)...

anyway....

feels like i have just had therapy saying all that, where shall i send the bill!!!!

now i have to buy tyres, i have a new belly pan, hugger, ermax undetray and street extreme zorst to fit... may as well do it now.... a small silver lining, dont need the 200 lay out for tyres though...

Richie

Avon Storms seem to be the way to go on an SV at the mo. Extremely popular within the Pennine Massive and one or two of the Border Patrolers use em, so does Rictus on his TBird
I love. Shame my rear got a nail in at 0.6 mm over the 5mm depth required in the tread to get the free tyre out of em..bugger
They have a nice garantee for punctures in the first 1000 mile or pretty new tyre!

It was my first puncture too, luckily the nail stayed til I got home, its been a paranoia of mine also

+1
I'm using avon storms, they warm up nice and fast, very confidence inspiring so far. Haven't run them in the wet yet, though they're supposed to be excellent by all accounts.
They're cheap too, can be had for 145 quid in SV fitments.

£180 seems to be the average price fitted. They are ace in the wet, and frosty conditions too

a can of Tyre Weld can be your friend in these circumstances - it can sometimes render the tyre unrepairable, but it'll get you home.

I was about to post my own thread on tyres, but seeing as this is already going I thought I'd pop a question of my own in too - hope that's ok.

I've been after an sv650 for a while and I finally have the opportunity and spare cash to get one - a bit late in the year perhaps, but it'll still get some use from me through the next 2 seasons until the summer.

I've found a guy I work with who has a nice one for sale, but he is (in my opinion) a little ambitious on his price, and while there's nothing much wrong with the bike itself, I'm a little concerned about the tyres - they are Conti Road-attacks with 3000ish miles on them - which as far as I can tell from a bit of googling, puts them at more or less the end of their useful lives - particularly in a city like Swansea which not only has some of the lowest driving standards in the country, but is also the rainiest city in the UK - so having reliable rubber is a must here - and of course I can batter him on his price !!

What do you recommend as a good wet weather / winter tyre?
Am I right to be a bit concerned about the mileage on his contis?

Can't comment on the contis-never used em, but the storms are exemplary in the wet. I've used em in some very wet and very nasty conditions. As for the bike in question...depends on the price tag for the year of the bike really, and its general condition, and if its been serviced regular.
You could pick up a bargain at this time of year too, particularly at the moment

Pegs scraping in the wet doesn't really tax the storms, and 9k out of a rear tyre mostly alone, and nearly 7k ragging it (ask people on glencoe ride...) with pillion. Good tyres.
