I ride reasonably long distance for my job and this time, I'm doing my longest trip yet Cardiff -> Hartlepool. My last long trip (Cardiff->Leeds), I got a decidely sore backside. I've just got some new textiles (these actually keep the weather off), but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be half as much padding in the "seat" of these. It got so bad that as a temporary measure, I bought a blanket at a services which I wedged between me and the seat which made things a bit more bearable.
The trip is next week and I've realised that I don't have long to sort something out. Aside from wearing 2 extra pairs of boxers (found this useful on the return journey home) anything else I could do at short notice (intending to get a gel seat, but haven't looked into it in enough detail to select one yet). Going in a hire car isn't really an option as it'd mean a full days travelling on both ends of the job. TIA. |

Try:

Interesting. Having racked up nearly 2000 miles on the SV I must admit I was thinking of a gel seat.
However my other half was suggesting the airhawk seat which apparently has a lilo type seat which would apparently help. The only drawback for me is that would give me problems with the height - Im on tiptoes as is. The only other thing I can suggest [other than comfy underwear] is have regular breaks and plan on that time wise too. |

I've been reliably informed that "good" cycle shorts are well worth it.
(Hmm, thinks ![]() ![]() I scooped a slice out of my SV seat which improved it no end, and I've re-shaped the seat on the Deauville. They're both comfy, but the limiting factor for me is sore skin due to "pulling" against the lining of my leathers, so cycle shorts are on the shopping list. |

HG sell either the airhawk or something similar (saw one in Bristol) and you may well find one at the Rydale Cardiff (BMW dealer) if you want one. The long distance guys seem to use them a lot. My new strides are decidely less padded than my old ones too. I was thinking about cycling shorts, or padded sycling liner, but havent yet tried it.

How about sticking some bubblewrap over your seat with masking tape.

How about developing your own padding?
Half-a-dozen burgers a day for a month or two should sort it ![]() |

![]() My brother is a competative triathlon runner (well, cyclist) so I'll grill him on what he reckons is a good one. Jambo: I find shifting about helps prevent cramp in my legs, but regardless of whether I move fully forward, or fully back (or even stand up, trailie style for short spells) it doesn't seem to make things easier on my backside. Ta for the suggestions folks. I'll bear them all in mind. Any others? Just to confirm- adding height to the seat is no problem. Even an extra 2" wouldn't cause me problems getting my feet down and I like the improved view. |
