This one is for those that have split their bikes rather than selling them whole.
I've got a 99 SV Y that is looking for a new home and I read recently that it may be worth more as parts. I'm loathed to do it becasue it's in such good nick but if there's a large difference it may have to go that way. For those that have done it, what would the difference be (roughly of course) I've not got much idea on what the parts would be worth either. Cheers, Carl |

Well while you might get more money in the long run, it will take up your time. Somethings will need to be picked up, like the engine and frame. But most can be posted, as I've had a whole front end posted to me before. So don't be surprised if you find alot of your time being eaten up by it.
Also you might find some bits just don't shift, or go for hardly any money, so could be hang about for a while, so as long at storage is not a problem its fine. General a very tidy example of a curvy goes for 1500-2000, and I mean a minter. This is simply because the there are just as many minter new shape models about for silly money. As parts you might get about 2500... Pete just sold his for bits after the same discussion so have a look here for a idea. Last edited by Grinch; 20-10-08 at 06:39 PM. |

We have broken our bike as I considered it to be worth only around £1400 whereas in bits possibly £2,200. Quite a bit extra.
We'd already got another bike so how long it takes to shift the items isn't that important. Plus you save having all those time wasting tyre kickers scooping out where you keep the bike. However we have only sold the engine and a few body panels so far. Could be well into the new year before we even get a grand. Cheers Grinch for the link Last edited by petevtwin650; 20-10-08 at 06:43 PM. Reason: Cos he did. |

In fairness Pete you had a lot of nice aftermarket parts that would have fetched more money being separated from the bike and sold separately. Everyone knows that extras on a bike are not worth as much if you sold them separately.
There is more to be made from breaking the bike up and selling the parts separately. But the balance has to be taken into account of time and effort involved in doing so. |

I would just sell it whole. unless you've got loads of really nice trick bits on it you're not going to get that much more for it. Also as Grinch said it will take up a lot of your time and you will be left with all the bit's that people rarely need to replace. I had a swingarm in my garage for about 3 years before i shifted it

![]() mmmmmmmmmmmmmm shiny bliiiiiiiiingggg. The precious top yoke it stares at meeeeeeee ![]() Theres always a magpie or two that needs parts. Personally I couldn't be bothered with breaking a bike, but then I'm a too sentimental b would have no where to put the parts round the house

Breaking bikes isn't fun. I'd sell it as a whole unless it's advertised for a few months and you can't get a decent price and you know you can clear a good chunk before you start.
