Hey hiya all, anyone ever had this? Went to work this morning in the ice, frost and snow, aaaaagghhh scary! Anyway when I arrived at work it felt like my front brake was seized on, worked fine yesterday, and then today was holding the bike back under acceleration as you would expect.
Its not fully on, but it does feel like its binding with every front wheel rotation? Anyone any ideas? Cheers all. Last edited by Sid Squid; 29-10-08 at 05:42 PM. |

The calipers are likely to be full of crud and goo, they will need to be removed and cleaned at least, but it's more likely that they'll need stripping.
Other possibilities are a clogged master cylinder or a pinched or internally damaged brake hose.

you can unbolt the calipers off to have an initial peep without anything going wrong

In theory it's straight forward, but it can be a real swine in practise with seized caliper pins commonplace. All I can suggest is to get yourself some plus gas or other releasing oil and be patient. You'll likely need a whole day to do a caliper overhaul.

Closer to 2 hours when you've got the hang of it.
Siezed caliper pins, just grind off the nipple and tap them through from other side, way easier than faffing about with mole grips and having to replace the pins.

cheers all,,came in tonight and took the caliper off the frame ,,removed the pads to expose the pistons. The top piston is working fine but the lower one seems stuck,I used a c clamp and the brake lever to check them both, only the top moved.Tomorrow I have a day off work so I guess I can take the pistons out and clean them, from what you have said it could be just gunged up???????
I hope!!!! cheers PJ |
