Default Helmets on airplanes...

Has anyone ever taken thier bike helmets on a plane, specifically Easyjet?

I realise that this is not the normal thing to do on a flight but I will be flying out to meet Mousetrapper in Sardnia for our Summer hols (he is going because of work so is riding the SV down there, doing his work thing and then I will fly out to meet him and ride back up through Italy!!)

I have emailed easy jet and they have simply said that as long as it fits thier dimensions for hand luggage there isn't a problem but they apply this to general hand luggage and did not specify that a helmet is fine! I am just a bit concerned that I will get to check-in and they'll refuse it as hand luggage!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Personally I would either courier it there or just get another one out there.

If customs decide that there may be drugs in it then they can smash it with no recourse to compenation.

If they decide that it wont go on carry-on (and as carry-on seems to be based on a briefcase size, they could get picky. I would then not trust a lid thats been through standard baggage handling.

I would get it in writing that they will do this before turning up tho.

What if they say "sorry its all full, we will have to chuck it in the hold"

Unfortunately it's not practical to buy another when I get there as we have intercom (Directions and maps are not mousetrappers strong point )

But thanks for your thoughts and if you have anymore let me know!

I've taken a helmet on a plane once, but that was about 10 years ago, before the current terrorist hysteria. I doubt that they'd refuse it as hand luggage but, as Soulkiss says, customs could take exception to it.

YES.

The first time I took it in a backpack bag. I had trouble finding a small enough looking backpack that it would go in, so on the way back I took it in a drawstring bag with my camera, book, bottle water >100ml etc inside the helmet due to the 1 item restriction. It looked a smallish bag and I wasn't questioned about the size of it HOWEVER when I tried the bag sizer thingy on the quiet (a long way from Easyjet's desk ) it actually wouldnt fit in despite obviously the overall volume being much less. But I think its easy to get away wioth as its doesnt look that big, it only juts doesnt fit mind. Thing is people can sqeeze and squash oversized bags but you cant do that with a helmet.

A second time I couldnt be arsed with all this so packed it in the middle of my hold luggage well padded out.

Of course you could pay them to check it through on its own as a separate item or in a poly box or something but that will cost.

I also have taken it long haul in its bag as a separate hand luggage item when you were allowed two (mine is clearly a helmet as it has a peak etc and says Arai on the bag) and have never been worried either by the security x-ray or customs.

.
scaremongering as usual. the chances of them not just xraying it are pretty remote.

You might as well say you'll never fly just in case they want to do a full cavity search on you.

My experience of flying with a helmet was also before the current hysteria, but it was on a very small plane that people had their laptops etc. taken off them to stow at the gate, but they realised the importance of me keeping my helmet with me at all times.
