Default Theft! Robbery! Possibly...

Well, took my bike to work today for the first time since the January Shire Horse meet. Upon removing the cover, it seems my tax disc and holder have disappeared . Now, it has been a bit windy and snowy, but I can't imagine that has been enough to unscrew a bolt and make them all disappear without a trace? So I conclude that someone must have stolen them . Here's the funny part: I was coming outside to fit my new tax disc as my old one had expired . So they stole nothing! Apart from my holder.

Next question: my tax disc is now under my seat. I know many people keep it there because as just proven, if it is on display it can get stolen. But it does say on it it HAS to be displayed on the vehicle?! So has anyone got in trouble with not displaying it? ANPR etc will all know it is taxed, its only if a guy actually comes walking round whilst it is parked. Opinions?

It is an offence "failing to display up to date road tax". However, if you have it in your pillion seat, you should be okay...

You've just reminded me, mines in my tail pack.....AT HOME!

Yes it must be displayed on the front left of the vehicle I believe. Although no one's bothered about the front left thing mine's on the front cylinder (RHS).

Only bike I've dispayed a tax disc on in a while is the 400 for (obvious reasons). Never bothered on the SV. If you get a fine though, you can't sue me....

I thought the new law was you couldn't be fined for not displaying it, only if they then check and you don't have one.

only within 5 days of the VED renewal date, to give time for those who do it online to get their discs in the post...

Isn't the 400 so old it's tax exempt?

I got pulled because my tax disc had fallen off the windscreen of my car and was lying on top of the dashboard. It was not hidden, just not stuck to the screen. I didn't get a fine but got a 'producer', which was a pain. I think it comes down to what sort of day the copper is having when he sees you 'failing to display'

ive not replaced my tax disk when it expired last summer. I have taxed the bike and have a valid disk at home but my holder is rusted solid and as such cant be undone and im not going to buy a new one just for that. Never had any trouble for it. They can look it all up on the computer, its a pointless law and not worth bothering with.

Obviously you can get in trouble for not having one and i am in no way condoning not having one but ive never had an issue.

we had a spate of these thefts here a while back so i went along to the Nice Traffic Police and asked the question. One was a biker. Original must be displayed, not in walley, not under seat, Definately not a photocopy (which i previously had been told was fine) or you will get done for fraud as well as failure to display.

Pays your money and takes your chance, but if its not on display and you get done, dont moan about it
