Default Motorcycle Dealers

I set out today with a big list of postcodes to whack in the GPS, and do a tour of the bike dealers in the area. Now I've experienced one or two decent dealers before, so I won't tar them all with the same brush. BUT... here's some free advice for them:

  • Excellent condition doesn't describe a bike that's been down the road, rusted to ****, or has holes in the fairings. 'Good' wouldn't even cover that.
  • If you're making me pay a premium to pay for 'dealer facilities' (and fair enough), then please leave enough room inside to get close to the bikes or even... sit on them!
  • Put prices on the frickin things, and don't sigh when I ask for details. Wanting to know how many owners a bike has or whether it's an import isn't much to ask when there's thousands of pounds at stake.
Think I'll look privately

Ah, the joys. I actually wrote and complained to a dealer near us as they didn't call me back when they said they would, and ignored me and talked to my OH, even when he said it was me buying it.

i agree with all the above!

i had my eye on a speed triple, twas 7k, an 08 model with 750 miles on clock and was 'immaculate'....so they said.

i went to view some other bikes and the one i was interested in was sold......but it had done 1300 miles and was scratched to feck everywhere

i wasnt impressed with that triumph dealer at all....they basically lied over the phone to get a deposit. the moral of this story is view before ya buy, dont go by adverts or even their word, its all bowlax.
rant over

Well I'm voting with my feet! It's so different to car dealers where they give you cups of coffee, offer test drives instantly and can't do enough for you!

I had a really rather pleasant time at a Motorcycle dealer the other day. Cups of Tea, friendly, helpful, and the bike was better than advertised. Lots of information to be given by the salesperson, which resulted in him achieving a sale

When I was looking for my first bike some of the dealers I spoke to couldn't give a toss. Most of them weren't interested in offering test rides and the prices they were advertising the bikes at were just laughable. One dealer wanted to charge me £20 just to take a bike out for a test ride!! One of the dealers who did offer me a test ride laughed at me cause I wanted to put all my gear on before I took the bike out and then let me ride a bike with a flat rear tire (which stepped out on me as soon as I opened it up).

I honestly don't know how many of them are still in business.

That said some dealers are genuine and offer good service so I am not tarring all with the same brush.

I can recommend Shorrocks in Preston. They were more than helpful when I bought my VFR and thoroughly nice chaps to deal with. I will be going back for my next bike, despite the 180 mile round trip.
