Default Advice please.... Chain.

I know its been talked to death a number times but i cant seem to find what i need when searching...

My chain... Looks a bit rough. And has the tel tail orange tint to it and i was about to get a new one but.... Its only done 7500 miles. I have a scott oiler ready to fit and want to know whats the best plan.... Do i give the chain a real good clean and then fit the oiler or am best just buying a new chain kit.

Obviously i would rather save the funds if its possible and not fork out for a new chain but dont know the best way to clean the one i have.... so advice on that would also be appreciated.

All i know is not to use wd40 and use parafin.

Cheers

Dave

As you said use Parafin. If you have a clean sponge I find that that is the easiest way to do it. Dip said sponge into the Parafin and apply liberally to the chain. If you have a rear paddock stand use it as you can move the chain round really easily.
Once the chain is nice and shiny again wipe off the excess and dirt with a rag. Then take the bike out for a short ride to shake off the remainding Parafin and also warm it up.
Once warm apply chain lubricant of your choice, the warmth will help it soak in more.
Fit scottoiler and never worry about it again just kidding

I know you say its only done 7500 miles but if its not been looked after it may already be past its best, or it might just be a bit of rust on the side plates.

How have you been looking after it so far ? Is there much adjustment left, are you having to adjust it frequently now ? A good test for chain life is to grasp the chain at the 3 o clock position on the rear sprocket and if you can pull the chain away from the sprocket enough to see daylight then its probably FUBAR, but without seeing the chain in the flesh its hard to tell.

I'd be inlined to clean it if you feel it needs it and then fit the scotoiler, keep a good eye on it and remember that a scotoiler is no substitute for daily checks on the tension and adjustment if required.

If your really concerned about it seek the 2nd opinion of a local mechanic, either back street local garage or a dealer.
