Default Weeping Fork Seal

So guess first port of call is replace the oil and dust seal, though I guess the dust seal isn't a must but may just do it so everything is fresh...

How to I remove the dust and the oil seal?

Haynes, I think (from my knowledge of reading it the other day and not having it near me) it says take the whole fork leg apart Is that really a necessity Sir? Or, is there an easy way? If it helps I'm gonna be putting fresh oil in the forks when I do it.

Yeah I was checking this too as mine need doing.
You need to take most of the leg in bits as the oil seal is located in a hard place to get to really.

I don't think there is an easy way.

Its really rather easy, though its it RWU or USD as I can't remember what your riding at the moment.

RWU mate.

I'm guessing, obv remove the forks from the yokes and get some sort of tool in to remove the seals?

you need to take the fork leg apart! don't go digging the seal out with a screw driver you'll dammage the the crome!!! Come up to my house and i'll do it for you!! lol

Just on a quick note have you tried cleaning the seals out with a film negative?? It's an old trick i do with my motocross bike as it gets dust trapped in the seals and causes them to leak! Just get some film negative about 4in long slide it in past the seal and work it all the way around the stantion and pull it out! You should see the muck come out with a little oil! wipe the fork leg to remove any oil and then pump them to see if there still leaking, If so then repeat, If it's still leaking then it's time to change the seals!

it is dead easy, i did mine for the first time. once you have it apart you relise how simple it is.

it is a full stip down but in its bare components there is little more than 10 bits to a fork. follow haynes you cant go too wrong.

btw do not go to suki for bits, use wemoto or similar. half the price suki quoted me for the parts

Yeah, just checked it, b ut Wemoto are pattern seals...advisable?

Depends on how long you intend to keep the bike. Pattern seals are very hit and miss. They'll work fine for a season, maybe more if you're lucky. The Suzuki ones are worth paying double for - to save you the hassle of doing the job twice.

Also, it's not a job you worth bodging mate. They'll leak instantly if you nick the seal when fitting it. A new dust seal isn't so important, much better to get a fresh crush washer for the bottom bolt.

Just done mine, once the forks are off the bike its an hours work max.take the dust seal and circlip out and then take the tops off the forks and take the spring the washer that sits on top of the spring and spacer out. theres an allen bolt on the bottom of the leg, take that out there will be a little copper washer i would replace them but when you take the bolt out get ready to catch the oil, you can speed it up by pumping the for with out the spring in its easy to do and the oil will come out no problem. the way i got the rest of it apart was to put the forks back int the yokes and give them a good yank a ew yanks and there apart, catch the bush and washer. theres a part in the chromed part i dunno how to spell its real name so im not gonna try that sticks out of the bottom of it and has a little plastic stub on it, the part with the stub on the end of it is real important, its what holds the parts together so dont loose it. now put the last parts bac togehter and make sure that the little plastic part doesent fall off the end when you do it an easy way is to do it sidewards so hold the stanction and leg like they were lying on a table make sure that the internal par is through the stanction and the little peice of plastic is on the end of it now slide the leg and stanction back together and line up the hole in the plastic part with the bolt hole and put yoru bolt and copper washer back in and make sure that the bold is in the thread and not cross threaded etc. refit the bush and washer and then Slide the new seal on and tap into place gentally, i did it with a piece of pine and a mallet. Now put the circlip back in, theres a grove in the fork leg that it fits into. Now to tighten the bolt at the bottom properly you need to grip a part in the fork stanction if you dont have the right tool you can try what I did which was a golf lub handle and alot of weight put on it while some one else tightens the bolt up now put your spring in the right way and the washer on top of the spring, then the long spacer or tube as i called it till my dad corrected me and then put your oil in. There was 400ml in each of my forks for the little bandit your might be slightly more so find out put the tops back on and tighten up and pump them a few times and fit back into your yokes and tighten up. same with the other one make sure that there back in the right place and put your wheel back on and pump the forks together on the bike a few times and go out for a short trip. A few miles go back and check them if there not leaking well done. If they are repeat everything....


Sorry its all jumbled....and you probably cant understand any of it. You could always just do it the haynes way.
