Default Anyone gone from SV to K5 GSXR600

After borrowing a mates K8 GSXR 600 I need a supersport in my life.

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to buy a K8, but can afford a K5.

Has anyone gone from a Pointy to a K5 GSXR and got any thoughts on how they differ?

Or indeed from a K5 to K8 GSXR?

Specifics I'd like to know about - stand over height, is the K5 going to be any bigger than the K8 GSXR or my SV?

Pillions - are they going to be any more uncomfortable?

Rider - am I going to be more or less comfortable? I thought the K8 GSXR was more friendly on your back and neck, but heavier on the wrists. Is this going to be the same on the K5?

Overall riding experience, I know the K8 will be better then the K5, but presumably the K5 will still be streets ahead of the SV, and still be fairly similar (in comparision with the SV) to the K8?

I went from SV to a K6 gsxr600,

Yes it's a lot different to the sv, better suspension, better brakes, more speed if you want it, none of that necessarily makes you any faster though

I find it more comfy than I found the SV. Yes it's harder on wrists but easier on your back I think.

I reckon a k5 gsxr is about the same size / weight as the SV but it will feel lighter. In real world terms a K5 is just as good (arguably better) than a K8.

My advice? Get a k5 750 instead

I went from a K1 SVS to a K5-GSXR 750, my other half has K5 pointy SVS which I've put a few miles on.

Pillion - Liz says imy GSXR is the most uncomfortable bike shes been pillion on

Rider - Its heavier on the wrist, the seat is higher and you sit more over the front of the bike. But its for me much more comfortable than my SV ever was.

I've ridden a K6-GSXR 600 as well. TBH theres b*gger all difference between the K5 and K6 models. I dont know about the later models, But IIRC its mainly cosmetic changes from the K6 onwards, althought I think the K9 has one of those power map buttons and I'm pretty sure the K6 onwards have a gear indicator which the K5's dont have.

The only way your going to know is to test ride a K5 and see how you get on, but you wont be disappointed.

I don't know about the K5 600 but I can vouch for the K5 750. But that was from a ZX-6R, never ridden an SV. (Why am I here you might ask!)...

Thanks for the replies.

I wont ask, but how do you find the K5 compared to the ZX6R, if you try to ignore the extra 114cc.

I hoped to have a look at one tonight but it will be tomorrow now.

It was a 2001 ZX-6R (600cc) so the 750 is a fair bit more powerful. Its a much better bike, but part of that must be down to being 4 years newer as well as the extra grunt. Feels like a powerful 600, and is far more flicky than the ZX was.

So even without the power difference, its a far superior bike. Easier to ride, easier to go round corners, fuel injection instead of carbs. But, its also a more extreme riding position, its quicker, insurance is higher. I dont think its really fair to compare a 2005 750cc FI bike to a 2001 600cc carb'd bike though.

Pros and cons, and I had to have it the moment I saw it.

I've heard the 750s are just a better bike in general, comfier and less revvy than the 600. Can't remember where I read it though. If I live to the ripe old age of 21 I'm gettin one.

It rev's just like the 600 does. i.e like a nutter. But the power comes in earlier down the rev range and it has more torque so it pulls harder.

TBH modern 600 like the K6 GSXR has very good low down response anyway, so there isnt the gap there between the 600 - 750cc bikes that there used to be.

I primarily got mine because its an anniversay edition and I got it for the same price as I would have a K6 600 as it had been sat in the showroom for ages and the dealer wanted to clear it out of the way to make room for new stock so I got a good price on it.

After reading this thread so far I got a quick quote for a Gixxer6 just to see what a 21year old with 1years NCB would get quoted. I must say - If I wasn't resctricted I would be chopping the SV in tomorrow as it's only another £100 (I reckon I could get that down after making a few phone calls though!)

Sorry de-rail over.

How the hell!? It would have cost me a fortune to insure a 600 last year!

It costs more for me to insure a 600 than the falco. HA ha Ace
