Default Neutral selection problem while engine running

Hello all,
My gear selection seems to have gotten a bit iffy. The bike has [annoyingly] sat around for ~8mths. I have kept it running, but not out on the road. As such, I now have a problem with the neutral selection. It was always a little stiff, but now it's very bad.

Basically, when the engine is running, I just cannot shift her into neutral and it is very hard to get her out of first while stationary. Once moving, getting her out of first is no problem, and any other gear change is fine.
To summarise the neutral problem, I can get all the way down to first, and then it feels as if the level gets stuck on something and it just will not shift up. If I can get it to move up (with a large toeful), it naturally jumps up to second. At traffic lights and stopping, I have to resort to the side stand to get the engine to stall, then select neutral (and restart).

I have checked the lever movement and it is not restricted. I have a good level of engine oil. I have rechecked the chain and that is fine. I forgot to check the clutch cable and that will be next on the list.

Can you guys think of anything that may be obviously wrong?

an oil change might help, if its been sat 8 months. Have you had a good look behind the plastic front sprocket cover to see what mankiness is hiding behind it?

Theres other more technical things to look for, but somebody far more wise will come along and advise about those

Cheers DB. I have cleaned out as much as I could see, but that doesn't seem to be affecting it. I do intend to do an oil change, it is really quite dark, but didn't have enough oil left today. I am taking her to get the MOT re-instated (failed last week due to front callipers sticking - full overhaul has remedied that ), so will get more oil. On a side note, will neutral selection affect MOT pass/failure?

ermmm I doubt it. Depends on the tester TBH. They're more interested in brakes, and bearings, wheel alignments and horns working than gear selectors. Not something that mine looks at anyway.

Yeah, the fussy dealer that failed it last week didn't comment. It is going to a better, more friendly one tomorrow that my family use, so I hope they will be a bit pragmatic.

Anywho, back on topic - I'll try an oil change and clutch cable adjustment when I next get a chance.
Thanks!
