Hello ladies and gentlemen
I am picking up my new 650s sport some time this week, very excited! I was just wondering about running in- is it 600 miles at 5000pm as I read somewhere on the net? Anything after this? Obviously I want to get this out of the way as quickly as possible so was thinking about a motorway trip for visit my friend 200 miles away, what speed can you do without going over the rev limit? Is there any way suzuki can tell if you have not followed the instructions to the letter and shaft you later for warranty issues? Thanks in advance George |

Hiya,
Congrats on the new bike! I don't know about running in because my bike was a couple of years old when I got it, but if it is 5,000 revs for the first 600 miles, and assuming that the sport is geared the same as my K4 Faired model, then that will be around 70mph in top gear.

you'll do more harm for the engine sitting at a constant motorway rpm for 600 miles than ignoring the rev limit and riding normally...
imo of course...

You do not want to be doing a motorway trip mto run the bike in. It is recomended that the revs be varied whilst running in. Still go and see your mate but take the scenic route.

Welcome
Hope you enjoy your bike. Your right on the revs, first 600 mile keep it below 5000, then I think its below 7000 rpm up to 1000 mile. There is alot of stuff about reving the hell out of it right from the start and how it improves performance but to be honest I prefer to stick to what the book says on a new machine. When I was running in my K9 I would get to about 70-75 Mph without exceeding the 5000 rev limit. |

Vary the revs, let it rev free occasionally under low load conditions. Don't lug it at low revs and loads of throttle as that is high heat conditions you want to avoid.

Personally, I just ride the bike normally. That don't mean to say I thrash it. (Mines relatively new still!).
But I certainly don't stay at 5000rpm. As yorkie chris says, vary the revs, don't labour the engine, thats the worst you could do!! Last edited by Speedy; 25-05-09 at 06:45 PM. Reason: Forgot the 'as' bit! |

There is a school of thought that says manufacturer's running in instructions are rubbish.
Instead, ride it for about 10 minutes to get everything upto normal operating temperature, and then rag the **** of it at full chat for an hour and oil change. The theory is that normal running in polishes the bores whereas ragging it hard will cut off any high spots. Of course it is your engine/warranty so you decide. Race engines I have worked on with tighter tolerances than road engines never so much of a running in, they worked for a living

Buy a new filter and some oil. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm |
