How do the cans differ? They're always sold as for different makes, but I see no reason why one exhaust can can't fit any bike, as long as it fits? Would the inside differ? And even if so, surely two 600cc bikes (for example) could share an identical exhaust; I'd expect there to be roughly the same amount of output?
FOR example, if a Bandit 600's can has a 50mm inlet, and an SV650 does too, can they, or why wouldn't the can work on an SV? |

Yep, not a problem, so long as the can connecting pipe is the same as the header pipe its connecting to. Just difference between race (no baffles) and road legal (stamped road legal).
Some of the Suzuki's (and other makes) connect via a 4 bolt connection. But you can buy adaptors to connect to a round pipe if you buy a can like this

Oh excellent! Then there's a lot of exhausts on evilbay and stuff up for grabs now!
They should be listed as inlet diameter, not bike make! |

I had a Scorpion that was from a Gixer, but fitted fine on my headers, although they're Micron headers.

Biggest difference is usually the link pipe, in terms of fitting anyway.
But although you can often get away with simply looking for something that fits, there *is* more to an exhaust than that, even between same capacity bikes. |

Length, taper and bore can affect fuelling and power. But with standard headers its pretty academic.

90% of cans are a generic bore and length with no taper anyway.
