Default When do I need a new tyre?

How do you know when your rear tyre needs changing, I think it's at 1mm tread depth but where do you measure it as the tread gradually gets deeper?

And what is a good tyre for the SV650? I would want one that is maybe harder in the centre and softer on the outer edges.

Any thoughts?

Yeah. look n the centre of the tread (you would be quite special if you wear the sides out first) and slowluyturn the wheel. You will see little raised "steps" in the bottom of the big tread grooves. These are set 1mm from the bottom of the tread groove so if the tyre is worn to the point that the top of the step is flush with the surface of the tyre you need a replacement.

I didn't want to be horrible, but lets be truthful

Anyway, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers and regret after you get a ticket for an illegal tyre and wished you had asked the question, but were afraid to ask, 'cos you thought it may be stupid.

So you were right to ask.

Now go get a new tyre.

Was only messing.
It was a cheap shot not to be missed!
When I picked up the daytona from the previous owner it had just had an mot (the day before) and plowsie will vouch for how knackered the tyres were.
Sides were well work with about 0.5 of a mm on the rear and looked like a slick on the front.

Guess the MOT guy wasnt sure either...

Or the guy fitted new tyres to get it through the MOT, then re-fitted the old ones before selling it and kept the new ones for his next bike.

Depends what you're after for a tyre?

God reviews about Avons, cheaper but well recommended tyre is the Maxxis and myself use a Michilin PR2, good tyre, I get 5K rear, and 10K front.

If you want to know want tyre to choose read this first;

http://forums.sv650.org/forumdisplay.php?f=138

As Red said complete that check first, or a tyre depth guage can be used, you can get em from Halfords or places like that should you want to buy one.

Myself I used PR2 Dual Compound, which seem to work well for me. But if you want a dual compound I'm sure any one will be fine tyres are far better than the vast majority riders out there.

Be aware that the centre can wear very quickly at low tyre depth. Take it easy let us know how you get on.
