Default Hello!

Hey folks,

Didnt see where else to post as a newbie here, so forgive my thread if its in the wrong place!

Okay, a little background;

Names Rob, 21, from south of Manchester. Found my way here off Google and while I'm not currently a biker, its something I'm looking to get involved in. Close family members are bikers (Cousin and Uncle, and some family friends) so thats sort of where this has stemmed from! Been wishing to get into biking for a while, and I'm getting too a stage where I'm almost all set!

While I dont think I'll be doing it this year (Going to America early next year to do my Pilots license!) I've been looking around at bikes the last little while or so, and running through a few insurance quotes too.

Obviously, supersports are straight out the window, as the bikes are too powerful, unforgiving and expensive. Especially for someone with little to no prior experience. However everything I've read on the SV650 has been positive, its a beautiful bike, and its not particularly a fortune.

Now I wont refrain from saying the idea of biking scares me to death, which I'm thinking is going to stop me from throwing my life away. I'm certainly an adrenaline junkie, but I'm not a idiot! I'm sure my Uncle and Cousin'll teach me what I need to know, alongside the courses I'll take when I get the chance and justifiable spare funds to do so.

Is it entirely stupid to do a DAS course from almost-scratch and then hop on a 650cc 130mph bike? Logic screams yes, but like I said, I'm not looking to throw myself through a barrier, and its certainly not something I'm thinking of doing on a whim.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi, as I'll probably be lurking more than posting for the foreseeable, but from what I've seen you all look a sensible (Sort of, crotch rockets and sense... there has to be a screw loose somewhere :P) and nice bunch!

Cheers!

Rob

Hi Rob - Many people with little or no experience have done a DAS course and jumped onto an SV... You have two options and if you're worried about the power you can opt for the restricted route.

Are you or have you spent a lot of time in the States? (Crotch Rocket is a term I've only ever heard over there).

Lucky enough to have a family holiday home over there, am too and fro quite a bit (Odd holiday etc) (And why its more cost effective for me to be over there next year) So I throw the odd americanism into my conversations.

Which gets the mickey taken out of me by close friends!

Hey Rob. Welcome to the site.

I did exactly what you did, DAS then SV650. It's a very sensible route to take considering the alternative bike the DAS course allows you to ride.

The SV is a great bike to learn good biking on and a great bike to live with after you have almost perfected your riding technique (i say almost cos you never stop learning to you).

Hope all goes well for you and you will grace us with you presence in the future on a nice Curvy
