Hi everyone,
As some will know I am now commuting into London via A13 Mon-Fri... It appears that the back tyre has hardly any grip even when its fairly dry out. I think at one point this morning I was actually sliding sideways. I know its still got tread left so am unsure why its behaving like that! So the question is, what would the best tyres be for commuting and general sunday fun usage? |

This is a very subjective question and I expect you will have at least 6 different answers. I've always extolled the virtues of the Michelin Pilot Road 2's. Great milage and great grip wet or dry when used on my CBR600RR

Well to make it easier, I can recommend you dont fit bridgestone BT021's. I have had them on for 6000 miles or so now, and whilst they have been long-lasting, they are crap in terms of inspiring confirdence on anything other than a hot, sunny, dry day.
So dont get them. |

For commuting and a bit of Sunday frolics Maxi's seem a cheap option and todate I haven't heard any adverse reports.
Simple answer being if you are pushing to the limits buy the best you can afford but the majority of us never really push any tyre to its absolute limit so is it worth the extra expense? |

Any of these will do what you want
Michellin Pilot Road Avon Storm Metzler Z6 Pirelli Diablo Strada Bridgestone 021 If you dont like what you have on there now then pick something different off the above list. Tyres are very subjective and what I like you might not. Z6's seem to work well on the SV in my own experience, many others on this forum found that the Avon Storms were to their liking to. Comes down to price, personal preference and what you can get from your local tyre place. The roads seem to be very greasy at the moment with all the leaf mulch etc etc on them. So just take it steady.

There's a tyre review section here:
http://forums.sv650.org/forumdisplay.php?f=138 You should find some good write ups. I'd check your tyre pressures are correct and make a note of what you've got at the moment. Some tyres suit some people better than others, I've come to the conclusion I'm not all that fussy about tyres, having used Bridgestones, Dunlops, Michelins and Avons quite happily. What I have found is when the rear tyre starts running low on tread grip in a straight line in wet conditions drops off quite dramatically. Jambo

Although they wore out fast they were cheap (£120 for a set) I got a set of Pilot Sports, they were the most grippy set of tyres for my riding style. I didn't seem to get on well with Avon Storms for some reason, they were just too twitchy for my liking, which is funny because most people do like them and find them grippy. The BT021 I used for a short time, worked really well but I didn't get to use it that much so not much experience. I really wanted to try the PR2's.

I have the Michilin PR2's.
![]() I haven't managed to run out of grip, and I can get the bike a fair bit over. Knee and peg down and theres still small chicken strips. I get ~5K rear and 10K front. But that was hard summer riding on great Scottish roads. Had only one scary moment, cranked right over and it was a bit damp, but other than that, haven't had any trouble riding in the wet. It should be more than that if you're doing mostly town and m-way/dualer commuting. Last edited by Sally; 03-11-09 at 10:27 AM. |
