A lot easier than I thought. Most difficult part was in the pub, when most of the the night is spent outside nattering. But he went out a number of times to stand with friends who were smoking as a test and managed to resist

To be fair he was never one of your average heavy chain smokers (being a student tends to severely prevent this) but at the end of the day a habit's a habit, if you can kick it it's an achievement

Yup, that's the most difficult part. Even worse is that if you have 2-3 cigarettes when out for a pint, you'll struggle not to smoke the following day.

If you're giving up smoking, you have to cut it out completely. At least in my case.
