Default Whoopsi Mr R1 man...

OK, so some of you will have your local roundabouts for playing on...

We have one down here near Ebbsfleet train station. It'll be gone soon due to new houses etc etc. For the time being though, its ace. I actually posted about it a few years ago when absolutly no-one used the road at all. It was my mini racetrack as the station wasn't open, so no-one used it at all.

I stopped going when the station opened, traffic started to come, but recently I popped down there, had a few laps. Wasn't as fun, too scary, cars, and it was now popular with local bikers. I was expecting chavvy short wearing nutters, but most lads seem respectable, full kit, nice bikes. Im not one for roundabout knee downs tbh, i can't trust myself on the road, i'll save it for trackdays, but i like doing the odd 5 laps or so for a bit of fun. It makes me feel useless when the locals are going round with knee flat all the way round...

Anyway, get on with it....

I turned up on Friday after a bad day at work, riding Nelli makes me happy so popped down as it was on my way home. I done 1-2 laps and decided the road was awful, covered in stones and pulled over to chat to some peopel i didn't know... I look over and see a magpie, just 1, I didn't salute, and thought to myself "dam, i hope no-one bins it now I didn't salute"...

Que Mr brand new R1 man.. He comes flying in, pops a wheelie, I think he should be ok. He goes up to the top RA, back down to the 2nd RA, and all of a sudden the revs rise, i spin my head, and watch as he gracefully has the rear end go round on him, he slides down the road, bike slides further into the kerb and comes to rest...

I rush over, asking if he's ok as I hit his kill switch. He's fine, 30mph crash. We pickup the bike, and it chucks oil everywhere. GOne through the crankcase, and he's totally destroyed practically every panel. THe frames gound down, the bungs snapped off (cheap bungs!!!!), all his carbon is ruined....

I then find out its his first bike, and becuase he didn't want to pay £1k insurance, he said the value was low and went 3RD PARTY ONLY!!!!!

He plays it cool, its fine, im cool, makes bad jokes like he doesn't care. I say i'd be crying by now.... He goes on about bodge jobing it all, new crank case cover and selling it on... I've already lost any respect, leave them all to it and make my way home.

I don't think i'll be going round that roundabout anymore. I'll only go to watch...

And thats my story from Friday night..

R1 as a first bike is not a problem, nor is 3rd party only.

If you can afford the risk what is the problem. ( friend did it for her first bike). Therefore I read this as I saw somebody take their first off and assisted when it went down.

Highly disagree for a 24 yo imo.

Esp when he comes past on 1 wheel with only a few months experience..

But then I wouldn't give my son/daughter who's just passed their car test a Porsche 911 Turbo or Ferrari.

I did in my own little way. Daughter passed her test good Friday, and I could not change the insurance on my car until after Easter so she had to drive my company car. At that time an ST220

Na I agree with Daimo on this. You don't realise how much TPFT or TP only isn't worth the risk until you have an accident and aren't covered.

Also if you aren't insured for the initial cause of the accident you aren't covered for other things like Helmet and Leathers (under the same policy), Recovery Fees, Emergency Service Fees, Loss of earnings....etc.

And for a brand new R1, 24 yo with no experience £1000 was a bargain.

Indeed and indeed.

Its hardly surprising he did that on an R1. Too much throttle on cold tyre's Wooooops. Nob.

I dont see a problem. You are offered a proposal, it is your choice whether to go 3rd part or comprehensive insurance.

the lady I know went 3rd party on her first bike an R1 as she decided she was a bigger risk than the bike. But she could control herself. 3 years later she has bought a new ZX6r and gone comprehensive on this as it is too much of a toy.

At the end of the day, insurance is all risk. If you think you may go down by yourself, take comprehensive. If you think you will only go own by some fool take 3rd party. If you aint sure then ask yourself what can I afford to loose

Ah ebbsfleets ra's gauranteed to have people going round doing knee downs

First time i went there (in my car and new driver!) some one on a gsxr in relentless colours scared the c**p out of my knee downing round there, because it was dead then he came zipping round the ra, luckily i had my wits about me and stopped! also been passed by 2 kids 2 up on a crosser another time, no lids no plate, both must of been about 12, welcome to gravesend....

LOL!

Daimo,

I've been down there loadsa times to take photo's and stuff but I got told off by plod a few times so I don't bother any more. I've seen a few too many bikes go down at the RA nearer the station as well and I've also seen a kid in an old volvo hit the railings on the A2 on-slip RA trying to "drift" it round there. There's a chinese fella on a gsxr 600 in cadbury crunchie colours who used to go down there quite a lot who has also bitten the tar a few times while I've been down there. The place has become notorious for it.

I don't know if an R1 is "too much" for a new rider, but this guy sounds like the type that would have taken a CB500 to its/his limit and beyond if that's all he could have afforded to buy. It's never the bike's fault when something like this happens, even if it has eleventy-million horsepowers.
