Default Nerd in need... Linux questions

Help...

OK folks, this is a long shot, but would any of you know how I can use a Three Network USB mobile broadband gadget into a lap top using Ubuntu?

The gadget is a mobile broadband device made by Huawei, model E1550

I can plug it in to the USB port and it is recognised, but it does not run or access the network.

Any ideas? I can't go postal on it , because it is my friend's computer and gadget and I am trying to help her to sort it out.

I have had a quick look on the Synaptic package manager, but can't see anything obvious.

Cheers net nerds, I knew you would not laugh too much at me...

Yes, you need to use wvdial, I cannot remember the config off the top of my head though, do a google for it but it'll be a wvdial.conf something like this (this is for tmobile)

Quote:
[Dialer pin]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init1 =AT+Cpin=12345

[Dialer tmob]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init2 =AT
Init3 = AT&FE0V1X1&D2&C1S0=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = *99***1#
Username = username
Password = password
Stupid Mode = 1
Dial Command = ATDT

The lap top came with Vista and that is foul... I am thinking of putting Linux on it to get rid of the slow and cumbersome Vista that seems to take fifteen minutes just to start up and become ready for use. The computer is an Acer and this is the first time I have encountered Vista, it seems horribly complicated and hard to use.
