Default Reg/Rec problem with photos

1999 -SV650s, 38,000 miles

Since I bought the SV, which was 3 weeks ago I have not had much time to use it, mostly as the weathers been fine so I have used my Zed. However...on Sunday I went to start it and the battery was flat the bike turned over very slowly, So I charged it. It took a charge up to 12.7v , so i was concerned, popped it in anyhow, went for a good run with a mate, we covered about 250miles, some stopping and we did stop for lunch and each time the bike started without a problem, got home and left the bike for 15 mins, went outside and there was nothing, the needles would bounce about when I hit the starter and the lights dimned but the starter would not turn.

I took the rear panel to look at the Reg/Reg and this is what I found.

It has melted at the connector. Is this a Reg/Rec issue or something more sinister.

I would suspect that the melted connector is due to a high resistance contact probably caused by corrosion.

I would snip the connector off and put a new one (looks like you'll have to do that anyway )

Alternatively solder the rec into the loom and cover the joints with heat shrink.

+1 to what rachetjob said there. Afterwards, check the potential differance (voltage) across the battery with the bike OFF, then idle, then at 5000 rpm, then at idle again with the lights on and at 5000 rpm with the lights on.

voltage should be between 12.5 and 14.5 volts if the reg/rec is doing its job properly (i think thats the correct figures anyway)

Normally 13.8 -14.4v.

I had a Blade that would charge with no lights on but not with them on. The connector had melted exactly like that. So if you're going to put a meter on try it with the lights both on and off.

Did you only replace the connector? Not the Battery or Reg/Reg

Reconected the reg/rec and with a battery resting for 24 hrs at 12.9v.

Connected battery and started bike (pre warmed) Had a reading of 13.8v and with lights on a reading of 13.5-6V. sounds close to the tolerances.

The rear indicators dont work so I reckon there is some charge been lost around there somewhere but these readings are with the indicators disconected.

Have you checked your fuses?

yeah, checked the wiring to discover both rear indicators are not working so will replace them.

More definate reading today

My readings are.

idleing lights off 14.2 - Lights on 13.8

But when I rev it tp 5000-6000 rpm the reading drops to 13.5-13.6, never below 13.5.

Why is this?

Good morning all.

It doesn't matter which way round the three yellow wires go into the rec/reg, just make sure you get the others in correctly. Or more smoke will follow

Cheers.
