Default DIY 650mile service - is it worh it?

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of doing myself the bike's first service (650miles) and wanted some wisdom before attempting it.
The main reason is the inconvenience. First my bikes has nearly 600miles and dealers first available date is in about 2 weeks time. Second reason is that they cannot guarantee to finish the job in 1 day (lots of bikes queuing) so I might have to take a second day off. I also need to arrange alternative transport to and from dealer grr...
I talked to a nearby garage which is a HONDA dealer and they can book me in quicker and since is 500yards away from home, would make things a lot easier. They would charge me about £120 for the job though.
Which brings me to my questions:
1. Are there any warranties issues if I decide to do it myself and save me time and money?
2. What if I use a dealer not authorised by SUZUKI?
3. Apart from oil and filter change, routine maintenance (user manual), fluids checks and chassis tightening, is there anything else a dealer would do?
Thanks for taking time to respond.
Andy

£120 for an oil change and check over? Are they taking the pi$$?

Most of the time, you'll never need the warranty. But there's always the "what if". What is the warranty worth to you?

Definately dealer ....but find another that can do it why you wait ..... and for a sensible price ....

Lets face it, it'll take you a while to do, and money to buy the oil, etc ....

Spend the extra .... get it done properly, get the book stamped, get the warranty preserved, .....

EDIT ..... when I say dealer ... I mean garage ..... just NOT DIY ..... find a good indi !!

We have a member who runs a garage over here in Sunbury, Middlesex if you're interested ....

Thats what I got charged for the 500 mile service on mine. Absolute rapeage. I found an indy to do mine using the suzuki parts and schedule so the warranty can be kept up, and ill never go to the main dealer again.

they stamp it for £50 round here, then get the parts cheap and do it yourself.

So long as you use original parts and correct oil the service can be done by any competent person and your warranty should still be valid, just keep receipts for the consumables.

Had my first service today, rip of for 2.3 ltrs oil/filter/washer £124.42p, BUT if you want the "stamp" in the service record what are the alternatives? you need the specified filter/quality of correct oil and all service schedule items checked. Any garage that has a stamp for record purposes should be able to provide your needs. Time recorded for my service 2hrs, actual time taken because I stayed and observed 53 minutes, the Suzuki Service time allowance is SV650S 1.6hrs, SV650 1.5hrs.
Read the Warranty booklet VERY carefully to help you make your decision.
I will do my own when next due and sign myself with the necessary qualification titles.
