I work full time 9 till 5 job. I could not get to work one day, january the 5th because of the snow.
I received my holiday form back today and the cheeky gits had booked it has holiday. I now have one less days holiday this year. My point is that i set off for work, got stuck, turned round and managed to get home about midday. Not really what i would have done on one of my days holiday. Bit of a rant i know, but can they do this? |

AFAIK yes, they can. Certainly they have been taking either holidays or toil from us if we haven't managed to get in.

I think much will depend on what your employment contract says...

Yes they can, we gave our staff a bit of leeway with the snow, if we closed sites then it was a snow day, if it was just you then it was up to manager discretion (within reason based on extra houses we'd done for free before) or if it was a strict shift role you could chose to take it unpaid or as holiday

Pretty sure they cant force you to take it as a holiday, however otherwise it would go down as an unauthorised / un-notified absence, which probably would have more serious ramifications, black mark on employment record etc, may just have to accept it i'm afraid

Was public transport running sufficiently for you to get to work?
If not then your company has a duty of care to let you stay at home if it is dangerous for you to travel. I tend to listen to the news and make a mental note if the police advise motorists that they should only travel for essential reasons. If you are really wanting the day back, paid, then ask them to confirm in writing that they require you to travel against the advice of the authorities if the situation arises again........... That should get them speaking to HR nervously...... ![]() |

If I get paid a salary, that's how they get 50+ hrs a week of work out of me. But when I want to take my time off, I have to play by the 8-hr day (7 on Fridays... yeah right). Sometimes being unemployed ain't so bad... |
