Default Insurance Rant

To anyone who works in the Insurance industry...

Can you pass me a glimmer of an idea as to how they generate quotes, is it actually based on some financial/arcane formula or really just some random number pulled out of that place where the sun does not shine?

managed to pump all my detail into several of these wonderfull 'Comparison sites' recentley and I think the whole system is knackered.

All fully comp, parked on a drive, alarm, alphadot, no points and 7+years of NBC, 41 years of youth.

Bandit 1250 SA comes in at 300 - 325
1050 ST/Tiger/Stripple - 320 - 340
VFR800 - 320 - 340
CBF 1000 ABS - 320 - 340
KTM 9090 Adventure R - 320 - 340
SV1000 - 300 - 325
GSXR 1000 - 320 - 340

but the one bike that has kinda kept my eye so far (i know its ugly (but you get used to it), has a stupidly small tank, and is immature to consider) the B-King, seems to come in at 500+

I just cant consider how not just 1 bit somne 20+ insurers consider me riding a B-King to be twice as risky as a GSXR1000 with both parked on a freaking drive.

Am i just looking at making myself go insane trying to work this out?

I think comparison sites work on the basis of anal numeral extraction, but it usually gives you a rough guideline to work from. Its still worth picking up the phone and having a call around though, as most of them can usually do more with more information.

Because there's loads of GSXR1000s to nick, but the B-king is newest so most at risk?

All though I can't explain why it's the case, I can advise to try calling the lowest insurers you get from the comparison sites.
I saved a couple of hundred by going straight to MCE Insurance, rather than buying straight from a comparison site, because there are certain boxes the comparison sites don't tick for each insurer when searching, to make the process quicker and more general. So answering questions like "is your garage brick or concrete" which you don't get asked on comparison sites saved a bundle, for me, at least.
