Question Please help identify this noise.

Hi all

noticed today a strange noise coming from bike when riding ( loud enough to be worrying)

no noise at idle
when riding approx 4-4.5k a kind of popping noise which turn into a fairly loud whinning noise
clutch in sound still there
under 4k no noise
No clutch slip / bike running fine

Bike done 45k miles
only thing I know is front sprocket is fairly worn (20k)

Any ideas as I am worried (BTW has got oil in check often !)

Cheers Steve

Stange one, does it still make the noise with the clutch in and a closed throttle?
I think a good place to start (assuming it's runnibg gear) would be a good visual inspection and if possible get it on the paddock stand and turn the back wheel by hand (listening for any abnormal noises etc).
The noise might well be there all the time, and just gets loud enough to hear when you get to a certain speed.

check to see if its speed or engine revving related?

Problem is speed related , also when clutch is pulled in noise is still there , therefore I think its the front wheel bearings

Will pop to my local garage to get up on stands , hoping its just front wheel bearings

I guess @ 45 k they could need replacing

Cheers Steve

I had my SV do something similar, a squeak / chirp that turned into a whine / squeal as the speed built up.

This was also coupled by the fact my speedo started reading irratically.

Eventually the squealling stopped, as did the readings on my speedo.

I'm wandering if you have a similar problem or are about to experience one...

As I said get it up on the stands and spin the wheels over, without the engine noise you might find something either chain and sprocket or wheel bearing, breaks etc manifests itself.

Badly-worn chain and/or sprockets can do this as well. (Add to list of possibles).

chain may need adjusting as it may be so slack its flapping about.
