so EBC say about their pads for street use anyway...
"Sintered brakes last longer and generally speaking handle the heat of heavy braking better. In Road Race use we have to admit that there are almost NO organic pads that come close to Sintered compounds but that does not hold true in streetbike use where EBC Organic compounds in terms of performance are almost undetectable from sintered. Proof of this is that EBC Brakes was the first and probably still is the only Brake manufacturer with EC E R 90 brake safety approval of both its sintered Brakes and its Organic brakes on Motorcycle for public highway use." They've just talked themselves out of a sale with me as I was about to buy EBC sintered pads. Guess they've sold me the organics of their own brand rather than me buying somebody elses. My OEM front pads have lasted 22k miles so paying a tenner each side more wasn't a big deal, but if organic are just as good... Discuss... Last edited by -Ralph-; 28-02-10 at 10:00 PM. |

had both EBC organics and sintered pads, for me the later had more initial bite to it, which I like, but both pad stops the bike equally well

All depends on the riders taste and riding type.
I prefer sintered, i needed some emergency pads on my 7r and some organic stuff was put it and while it will stop the bike, the initial bite is not there, it does make for smoother braking though i think.

Yeah I've tried both, on balance I would have organic for winter, sintered for summer.

IIRC I have sintered HH on the rear, can't remember how that happened, but I do have to be a bit more careful when applying the brake as they have a bit more of a bite than you'd like to expect.
Can't remember whats on the front. But I know they are different to the rear ones.

I've had some pads on the VFR which I think were organic, they were fine for gentle and slightly spirited riding but faded, badly. To the extent that when ridden hard they became none existent. One scary moment after a fast ride I was braking from ~120 down to 0 and lost all braking at ~30 only saved by my normal early braking and stopped using the back brake. Only brake pads I've taken off the VFR that weren't worn out. I stuck with OEM pads (NISSIN sintered, ceramic coating on backplates) after that.

You can get fluid fade and pad fade where the pads degassing acts as a fluid bearing. Great if you want to spin a turbocharger at 100000rpm, not so good for stopping.
I guess the pads were just cheap rather than a specific limitation of all non-sintered pads?

Possibly, they were pattern pads from David silver spares.
I think it was the pads degassing as it suddenly lost all braking. I don't believe it was fluid fade but certainly something the ceramic backing on the OEM pads should help to prevent. Druid

No it isn't, ceramic backing is to reduce heat transfer to fluid and prevent fluid fade (boiling) as I understand it.
It actually increases the chance of pad degassing failure by this logic. But pad gas is a yes/no thing rather than fluid fade which will happen with every fluid, just the 'when' differs. I believe good pads are cooked at the factory to remove all gas.

WRT the SV on the road I found the EBC HH pads take a short while to warm up. It can catch you out if you go for the brakes in an emergency as you get nothing, brake harder and *then* they kick in hard, wheel locks and down you go.
