Do I really need my V5 for the mot?

Just logged on to my local bike mot place to get their number to organise an mot next week, and there's in their spiel how easy it is, just "grab your V5 and come on down".

Why on earth do I need to produce my V5, especially as I realise I've never received one since registering the SV with the DVLA at Xmas.

Is there some new legal requirement about producing a V5 for Mot? I can understand road tax, its a hurdle to cross to ensure bikes are mot'ed and insured, but what has the MOT got to do with "Ownership"?

I don't remember ever needing a v5 at MOT before?

I didn't think you needed it either, unless you don't have the old MOT, but I have a memory like a sieve for anything that I don't need to remember.

I just took my old MOT, they didn't even need that... just made it easier for them apparently!

V5 just makes it easier, there's no legal requirement.

Thats the impression I got was the above. The first MOT for my GSXR the garage asked me for the MOT, I got the impression they were being lazy and taking the frame number of the V5 rather than taking it off the bike itself.

Surely one of the tasks of an MOT is to check the vehicle being tested is what the V5 or DVLA have recorded. One way of spotting a stolen bike I'd have thought.

I'd be a bit concerned that I hadn't got the V5. Legal requirement to have registered the bike in your name. May be that the form never reached them or the new V5 never reached you which isn't quite so bad.

I totally agree. I'm guessing the do check it against the actual frame no. But its just easier to type it into the computer system that issues the MOT's if you have the V5 in front of you...

I use a little back street garage if giving them the V5 makes life easier I am happy with that as they dont mind about the unbaffled race can on my GSXR so I dont have to swap it for the standard one come MOT time...

Same type of MOT place as me then Fizz, but I've usually got my previous ticket as I go in a month or so early so get a 13 month MOT .

or turn your existing one into an 11 month one if it fails
