Default Clutch cable replacement? Pointy.

Hi Gang,

Happy new year.

Right, so first job of 2015 is to replace my clutch cable on my 2011 pointy with 32k miles, it seems I have run out of adjustment now and its a pig to change gear, especially into N.

I have done a bit of searching and reading and it looks a relativley easy replacement and Im not the worst with a spanner, but any of you org'rs got any gotcha's or tips through experience that the service guide doesnt mention.

I have come across this link, but its for a curvy - I imagine the process is similar for a pointy ?

http://www.bluepoof.com/motorcycles/..._clutch_cable/

Cheers
Gav.

Looks fairly comprehensive and its the same for the pointy. The biggest pain for me was disconnecting the cable at the clutch end, the fold down tab that keeps the cable nipple in place was a pain to access.

I changed mine at a similar mileage as I was convinced the cable was stretched. It wasn't and there as no fraying or damage. I came to the conclusion that the adjuster at the handlebars was the culprit as it was always slightly loose. So I used pliers to tighten the locking ring instead of fingers and it seemed fine after that.

Cheers for the reply John,

I think mine might be shot as the adjuster on the handle bar is now running out of adjustment. Nearly on the end of the thread.

Thanks
Gav.

Have you checked and adjusted the actual lift mechanism? I think it's more likely the problem is there rather than the cable. If the cable runs smoothly, can it really have stretched 10mm or so?

Have a look at where the cable enters to gearbox sprocket cover. There is adjustment available there via lock nuts and this might have come lose.

Take the sprocket cover off, slack off the cable adjusters at both ends, then adjust the clutch lifter mechanism as follows ... slacken the locknut, back the screw out a bit to make sure it's not bearing on the rod, then gently turn the screw in until you feel it touch the operating rod, then back it off around 1/8 or 1/4 turn. Tighten the locknut.

After doing all that see how the cable adjustment goes.

I'll second this and your bike is at about the right mileage for this to be worn, from my experience anyway. I had the same issue, running out of adjustment, not enough thread left on the adjuster and therefore it kept working loose.

It's quite easy to replace. The part number is 23200-11D00 and described as "clutch release screw", about £45 from http://www.robinsonsfoundry.co.uk/
