Default General Insurance Questions.

1. Differences bewtween Fully Comp and 3rd Party F&T??which to go for ?

2. Why is excess so high or is it just cos im a new rider for instance... i put vol excess at 300 and they put on 650 complusary = 950 excess !!!!!!!

3. what mileage is realistic as i thought i would put 8000miles a year will this be enough plan on few ride outs maybe work a back when dry only (5miles total) and general weekend fun!

4. what are the must and the rip off's ... as in clothing cover/legal cover/ Courtisy Car?

5. Done few online quotes an noticed they dont ask about security just is a garaged ?? does it pay to pick up the phone an mention if its well protected or is that just for my own pleasury knowing its safe?

6. Any companys to to try an to avoid so for best ones or ones im looking at is Bike Sure/Bennets/Dial Direct Bike ins

Tom.

On the subject of declaring your bike garaged, be a bit careful with the wording on your policy. My policy gave 5% discount for having the bike garaged, but when the bike was stolen I was told that there was a £400 penalty because it wasn't in the garage at the time of theft.

Luckily I argued the toss that the bike was nicked off my front garden because it wasn't the end of my riding day and this levy was cancelled.

My excess is £350, and I have a 10k mileage limit.
I have the legal cover, but waived the bail bond bit as I don't travel abroad on the bike, my clothing allowance is £100 I think

1. Google it, easier than typing an essay...

2. New riders will usually get silly excesses. Simply because you're quite likely to make a claim in your first year or two...

3. 8000 is realistic, For weekend only fun and a few rideouts I used to do about 5k a year, but do a lot more now on the ADV simiply because it's easy to cover big distances

4. Your house insurance may have legal cover, but any extras may increase your premium by a fair bit, for your first year you may be better getting basic insurance and a cheap quote. You won;t get a courtesy car but you may get a hire bike, tbh if you have a car it's not really needed

5. They won't care that spotty the dog lives in the garage and barks at visitors, but you should have the option to tell them about any chains or anchors you use. Just be aware that if you tell them and it gets nicked while your chain wasn't locked up they won't pay out. IME it's easier to just not bother telling them so that the day you do forget and it gets nicked they'll pay up.

6. Bennets and MCE are supposedly a bit iffy, but I'd be far more concerned that the policy isn't underwritten by a mickey mouse outfit, when I had my claim I dealt directly with KGM and they were fantastic

dont bother with the legal expenses cover... its really not needed and hikes u premium up. do you really need a courtesy bike if you have a fault accident?

point 5 - surprised by that cos most give u the option to state what security u do have on the bike if not garaged.

Tom.
firstly Tom how old are you? I'd be guessing less than 25 with that excess!

1. Third fire and theft covers you for the damage to other vehicles and when its tea leafed and torched. Fully comp as it says on the tin!!!

2. 650 is the standard young persons excess (250 excess plus 400 for the risk)! I would not take a policy with a 950 excess !! Pay 650

3. 8k should be more than enough! Mine is 6k and i need to increase it

4. Courtesy vehicles do add on a bit, I got the rest (except legal cover) as a separate £50 policy. Make sure you take legal cover

5. Ring round and ask what the underwriters would class you normal nighttime storage point as. As a yard with surrounding yards can be classed a open compound.

6. As some1 that has been through all this with my SVS Carol Nash were the most expensive i had. I would try lexham as they were the cheapest for me and the tick wasn't too bad (but charge a 50 fee as part of the qoute, but don't be put off!!)

Also be honest about any mods to the bike as they'll f*ck you over in the event of a claim.
I'm with Lexham and they are only interested in the performance mods and any body/ lever mods (unless significant) don't affect it

Hope this is of some help.

Regards
Andy

P.S if its this prohibitive shell out for 33 brake restriction as it will reduce it

Get the legal protection, it's normally only like a tenner and worth having incase you get screwed over. Lot's of bike insurance companies will give you Third party only cover to ride other bikes that are not yours, which is useful if you want a go on a mates bike, or have yours in for repair etc. Good little perk. Mine is with a company called 'La Parisienne' with another underwriter (CIA insurance) try them. I think it was through Compare the market.

Compulsory excess is what you have to pay by way of your policy legally.
Voluntary excess is what you agree to pay on top of the above, normally lowers your insurance a bit.

Lexham insurance are good. Been with them before.
Express insurance are a bunch of...
