Default Chain grease question

just a quick question, fitted new chain yesturday, it comes coated in "special grease" can i clean this off or does it need to stay there for a while? Reason being i want to clean it up and then put a think layer of scott oil on it for use with the scottoiler

That special grease is best chain lube you will find, do not clean it off, just start using your scottoiler directly.

+1

Can you actually buy it, it's not like dry chain lube more like wax?
Thinking about it I'm sure I've heard of chain wax.

Yeah I've seen the castrol stuff (used it infact) I'm thinking more out of a tub/tin.
Just thinking 1) I imagine it'd be good for somereason (but would need testing) 2) would make a nice compact travel lube! (for chains)

They stopped making that now

Replaced by Castrol racing chain lube

Basicly Castrol took their chain lube and their chain wax and mixed it together like some kind of witch craft to get the best of both worlds

T'is good stuff tho

Is there any way tin or that stuff the chain comes in so once the chain is cleaned it can be like new and coat the chain in the stuff as it seems to last quite a while?

They needed to do something, the chain wax was rather crap because it didn't penetrate into the roller/pin area and just sat on the outside collecting grit and crap, which turned to grinding paste. Lots of riders swore by it because it didn't fling, but they may as well have not lubed the chain at all, cos it won't fling then either, but they'd have saved the price of a can of worthless rubbish.

Can't beat a steady supply of oil to a fast moving component, even if you do get a little fling. It just encourages you to clean your bike properly and find those niggly little things that need attention.
