Default York IAM

Well I have just about dried out after riding in the worst rain I have ever been out in.

However, the day was brilliant. I loved it.

I was immediately introduced to everyone and made to feel welcome. At 34 I was the youngest there, by quite a bit, but I didn't feel out of place at all.

We did theory 1 first which was a bit death by powerpoint, and similar to what I had covered in Bikesafe, but it was delivered very very well by the cheif observer.

I then went out for a 40 mile ride with a senior observer on a 1:1. I followed him first on his pan, and what struck me straight away was how smooth he is. I told him I was cacking myself because of the rain, and with a few pointers and watching him, I was away riding at a good place in moonson conditions. For the first time in my life I was imagining the bike sliding away from me everytime I went round a corner.

We then stopped in Tadcaster to do starting and stopping in the John Smiths Brewery carpark.

I was amazed to find out the instructors get nothing for what they do, and all they want back in return for coaching you is a cup of tea at the end of each ride. No fuel costs nothing.

We also were told the group often goes up into the dales after the formal training session, and I am welcome to tag along. It strikes me as being a bit like a riding club.

The banter was brilliant, and the atmosphere made me feel at ease.

With my £50 bikesafe voucher the whole thing is going to cost me £89, and that's to get me trained to IAM test level. I can't stress how good value this is.

Prehaps IAM isn't for everyone, but it is defiantely for me. Oh and the pipe and slippers things is a load of old knackers.
