Hey,
im spraying a mud guard from my gsxr. i would like to attempt to paint just part of it rather than the whole thing, more for experience than any thing. Any one got any pointers on blending paint. ive rubbed back the primer and slowly gone through the differnt grades of paper into the good paint. there is now no ridge between primer and the original paint. where do i go now? i was thinking mask of the good paint, spary over the primer and use fine paper to remove masking lines and use scratch remover and polish to blend? Yes no? any help would be appriciated. cheers scott |

I wouldn't bother masking off any areas of good paint, this will give you a step in the paint that will only have to be rubbed back down again. Just spray the area that needs spraying and 'blow in' to the original paint (paint onto the good area an inch or two).
When the paint has fully cured go over it with some cutting compound to get a good finish free from overspray. It'll be about a month after you spray the mudguard that you will be able to do this, any sooner and you may find that the paint goes milky. HTH

By the way I'm hoping to use a colour matched aerosol tin of paint from a company I've used before. I got good result when painting in full with their tins. Will it still take a month with tins? Or is that for 2pak?

It'll take about a month whatever paint you use. You can do it sooner if you wish, but I am guessing that you are painting it black from your avatar pic, and black will show up the most if it decides to turn milky.
A mate of mine learned the hard way, when he had his black mk2 golf 16v resprayed, and hastily t-cut and polished it when it returned home, only for it to turn milky shortly afterwards. That was 2pac but still, for best result wait.

Paint normally blooms because of being used in a damp cold environment.
Don't bother with rattle cans, get your local painter to do it for you, shouldn't cost much if you have done the prep properly. Better right than standing for all the wrong reasons.

I wouldn't bother attempting to blend paint with the sorts of areas found on a bike. Just redo the whole part.

dust cover the primer to get a grip coat let that dry, then keep dusting the paint over the area until you cover the primer, let the paint dry then put a drop coat on it which makes it go a bit mat but take it further where you stopped to cover the primer let it dry then lacquer the whole thing.(thats how you belnd paint out)
if any problems let me know |
