Default top box on pilly seat

I know a few of you have attached their top boxes onto a spare pillion seat and I was just wondering if you attached the box straight onto the seat (after taking padding etc off of course) or did you attach the fitting bracket on that normally goes onto your rack then attach the box to that so that you could take the box off if needed but leave the seat on?

I have the box, fitting bracket and spare pilly seat poised and ready for me to have a bash fitting them all together lol..

Im thinking if I fit bracket to seat I could maybe get spare bracket for when I have child on as pilly so I can put the topbox on the rack instead...

ideas, thoughts and advice gratefully received..!

I attached the base to the seat.
Cant see the point attaching it to the seat as one of the bonuses is that it can be taken off within seconds and not look so carp.

Wow thats a very shiny, sparkly bike lol..

hmm so you haven't stripped the padding etc off the seat - yes it does look better, I have a spare pilly seat anyway for it so when its not in use I would take it off.. Usually have my seat cowl on anyway unless the child is coming pillion.

My base isn't as nice as yours its all metally and crap looking.. But certainly easier than stripping the padding off etc..

Cheers for that and the photos

I've got a 48 litre one attached to a pillion seat. Just bolted the base of to the seat. Drilled the holes in the seat, popped the bolts through and tightened them up as tight as possible. Had no problem what so ever. Even had the bike up to 125 with it on and it never wobbled or anything. Plus it keeps the weather off your back so you don't end up with as much road filth over your back. Theres a pic of my bike in the for sale section with pillion top box fitted if you'd like to look.

will have a look, ta Steve. Mines quite a big box, could fit lid and jacket in there plus trousers.. Did you take the padding off the seat or just left it on???

I just left the padding on. you need to buy bigger bolts though. My box is 48 litre and never got in my way and also cleared the pillion grab rail by about 10mm. Plus a pillion seat is only about £15 off fleabay so a massive saving over getting a proper rack fitted

Gonna piggy back this thread as its more or less the same...

Anyone had experience in bolting on the HG brand topbox to the pilly seat? It's a 46L at £30...cheapo compared to Givi etc. Cheap for a reason?

I spoke to the HG sales rep about this and he raised concerns about the pilly seat fixings being to weak to safely hold any topbox bolted to it, i quote "You can wobble the pillion seat just by using your hand, imagine loading it with any weight".

Thoughts?
