How is the water pump driven on an 01 model curvy sv650? As far as i can make out from the ron ayers exploded view here it seems to be driven off some type of gear inside the engine. Is this correct? That it is driven off the engine?
I am just interested in it at the moment i have a small leak between the o ring and the clutch cover so i am looking at the whole area am im going to be taking it apart soon (new o ring on order). Whilst im at it i dont suppose anyone could shed light on a mystery spare connector my bike appears to have? I will get a picture at some stage but will post a description now in case it is well recognised. It is located in front of the carbs but behind the headstock of the frame. It is a 2 pin connector with say 5-7mm thick black cables it is quick release with keyed holes one square one circle. The interesting thing is there appears to be 2 of one end. I cant remember which way round it is but i either have two males and one female or two females and one male, each with wires routed into the bike. (will try to follow them when i get pictures) edit: forgot common courtesy! Any help is greatly appreciated! Last edited by Elltg; 13-11-10 at 12:27 AM. |

Yes. The primary drive gear, (on the end of the crank - drives the clutch basket), also carries a smaller gear which drives the water pump.

Is the water pump drive leaking or is it the more common clutch cover leak?
Clutch cover can get warped over time, so you may need a new cover, not just a new O ring. Plenty of threads about this, do a search

Whilst I have the water pump housing off I can have a proper explore around the area and hopefully I will see any possible problems. |

Just a throw away thing here, considering the clutch cover O-ring crops up regularly.
I don't know how much Suzuki charge for the clutch cover O-ring, I bet it's not cheap. I recently needed 2 different size O-rings for Kawasaki oil coolers and for about the cost of those 2 pieces I got 15 of each in a suitable material (NBR) from http://www.polymax.co.uk/ They gave the efficient service you hope for these days from internet suppliers. If anyone knows the exact size and section of the clutch cover rings it would be viable to do a group buy for anyone wanting a spare. You could even try a thicker section if it's a practical proposition (groove dimensions allowing). Note that O-rings are dimensioned as cross section diameter of the rubber and the INSIDE diameter of the ring. For face sealing you usually size them to be a slight interference fit in the outside diameter of the groove (about 1% typically IIRC) so they are in very slight compression in the groove. As a guess, I put in 155dia x 3mm NBR rings in the basket and with postage and VAT it works out at £17 for 25 rings, that's 68p each. Pop in an envelope and a stamp, a bit over a quid a piece to orgers. Just a thought. Suzuki price?

£15m
![]() Good post though, why pay dealer prices for a item that is exactly the same, which you can buy elsewhere for sensible money

Guys just to say, it is the water pump o ring I am replacing. Also it is the water pump housing that is leaking.
PS your search link comes up with nothing anyway? I guess the searches expire. Got the o ring ( pictured as part 8, part no 17418-19F00 >> O RING) for £3.60 with £3 p+p ! ![]() |
