Default Who owns my bike? Registered keeper/owner?

Got some post today. Letter one from the DVLA said that I was not the registered keeper of my old, sold, bike anymore. No problems. Letter two contained the log book (V5) for the curvy and said I was now the registered keeper - but not necessarily the owner. Nice to see they have changed the log books again. It must keep someone busy. Anyway. Who is the registered owner of the bike? Do you want it back? Can you prove you are the owner?

I guess really that without a bill of sale (or the like) Ownership may be questioned. On top of that what proof of ownership did the last person have as they were just the last keeper?

I do have the paperwork but thinking stupidly, when you buy a vehicle will you need a full audit trail of bills of sales or invoices from new to show the ownership chain not the v5 to show the keeper chain?

Please note this is a rant, not a post for legal advice. Cheers.

Owner =/= Registered keeper

There is no such thing as a "registered owner" - if ownership came into question it would be up to you to prove it was yours and up to the other party to prove it was theirs in court

If the vehicle really is yours I'd say even if you have a limited selection of paperwork you'll have a lot more than any other party laying claim to it...

I don't think this is strictly true. If you have a lease vehicle or motorbillity for example you are the registered keeper but not the registered owner.

I guess my point was that a V5 does not show you have the right to sell the vehicle so is a series of sales invoices equally, or more, important?

You didn't understand what I said:

1. =/= means not equal to...

2. Again, there is no such thing as a registered owner, there is no register of vehicle owners...

Most people will think that if you have the V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear that you are in a position to sell it legally. That might not actually be the case, but it will be in most instances.

I guess that is my point. Having owned loads of cars and bikes I still look for the same words in any advert.........................V5, MOT.

The V5 now proves very little and the MOT doesn't mean it is safe, just that you are legal on that aspect of law until it runs out.

Although the letters did arrive in the post this morning, In reallity I posted this a little tongue in cheek for a lazy Saturday rant. I guess I was expecting posters to make claim to the bike with some spurious examples to why they thought it was theirs.
