Default Help with LED indicators please

Hi,

After a low speed spill a couple of weeks back which snapped off all the usual bits I decided to replace the indicators with LED items, front and back. They finally turned up today but I can't get them to work. I installed them front and rear on the left hand side but, whilst the old right hand side bulb indicators are still working fine I'm getting nothing from the led replacements except a flickering from the dash light turn signal light.

I can see there are posts about correcting fast flashing items with resistors and/or relays but mine don't seem to be working at all. As I said I haven't changed the indicators on the right hand side of the bike yet as I'm loath to chop up any more wires than I have to, but I wondered if having all four lights changed to LED units might solve my problem?

Any advice or suggestions would be realy appreciated, thanks! It's a SV650N K7.

Have you checked fuse? Not sure if dash light would light if that needed replacing though. Have you wired the the right way round? My limited knowledge of these things, is that if a standard bulb is wired with polarity the wrong way they will still light, however many led units won't.

Also, not sure on having to have them all changed to get them working (might do) but chances are you'll have to buy a LED flasher relay. You can do it with resistors, but the LED flasher relay is less likely to be problematic, both now and in the future.

Thanks Boot,

I had got the +/- wires mixed up! They're working now but flashing really fast, far too fast to be legal unfortunatly. Does anyone know what I need to fix the fast flash rate? Is it resistors on the circuit or a replacement relay specifically for LEDs or both? Sorry to be such a numpty; I'm rubbish on anyting electrical...

Many thanks

Either / or.

Have a search its been covered plenty of times. Somewhere will be a post explaining what ohm resistor you need and where exactly it needs to go in the circuit.

unfortunately theres an infinite amount of ways to make something flash. The most simple of these is by the resistors. but without knowing the circuit used we cant tell you if the resistance needs to go up or down (depending on which resistor or even how its fitted). as fiz says youl have to look for someone whos had this problem before.

Since its already been answered i wont go into detail but the whole point of a light emmitting "diode" is that it only allows current to go one way so yeah there was the problem.

Usual issue found is that if one bulb per side is changed (for instance, switching the LED indicator mirrors) from standard to LED, the indicators with flash much quicker. Can't remember how many flashes per minute you're allowed to be legal, but I think when you do both, it's so fast they're practically permanently on.

The resistor method results in the resistors getting hot, which may or may not cause problems long term for you. The easiest, least hassle method of sorting out the blink rate is to obtain an LED flasher relay, which is a doddle to fit, by simply removing the correct wires from the harness in the fuse/relay box and connecting - no cutting, soldering or anything else required.

You'll need to do a search for which wires to remove, as the colours can vary throughout the range.

i had the same problem, went on to e-bay and got a new relay for £6.00 and it's sorted now, they sell ones there for sv650 with LED and they work fantastic , resistors are to much hard work to fit on all the indicators lol

Thanks everyone,

I popped over to my local bike shop and got one of the Motrax Flash-it relays, followed the instructions on clm2112's thread and it's working nicely now! I've bodged the wires together with some tape until I can get over to maplin and get the bits to tidy it up a bit but they're looking good and flashing within the legal limits now.

Thanks to everyone who's posted here, I didn't think I was going to get this finished this weekend and I wouldn't have wihout your help. Now I just need to get the ding on the tank repainted and the crash bungs replaced and I'll be back to where I was before I threw it down the road!

Cheers
