Default Spain trip - roads, camping and F1

Hi,

It looks like we'll be heading to Spain in May. Thinking about the Portsmouth - Santander ferry ( that's a bit expensive, but saves us riding through France), around 15 May. Taking a week to get through the Pyrenees to Barcelona for the F1 race. After that we'd have ~10 days so we're thinking heading down to Gibraltar and Portugal.

Could someone advise on:

- roads - as I'm looking on street view, every A road seems to look brilliant, can anyone recommend any "must do" roads?

- Pyrenees around 15-20 May - I've spoken to a few folk and they said roads should be fine(?)

- camping - looked at a few web sites and it looks like they are opened - low season tariff . In France last year finding a campsite was easy - is it the same in Spain

- a cheap motel network? It doesn't look like F1 motel are popular in Spain.

And finally - the F1 weekend:

- Can anyone recommend a ticket web site? I had a look at a few but prices seem to vary a lot for the same seats?

- F1 camping - for those who have been there - any idea if it's possible to turn up on Thursday evening?

Cheers

I cant remember the name of the road, but Viper probably will if you PM him. If you are going to the Pyrennes and you can pick up the road we did that took us through Sort and back into France that way, I can highly recommend that. You'll be going that kinda of way to get to Barcelona I would have thought...

The m/way east towards france is a high speed head-****. Up and down round and round the mountains, a m/way only the Spanish seem to be able to build. Beautiful. Turn off when u reach Irun/ Lezo(snigger/ photie!).

N260 from roughly Jaca onwards is all the road you will ever need. It really is all good although the most popular "must-do" bit is Sort to La Seu d'Urgell.

If you are thinking of jumping over into France the 3 Cols is a topper. From near Laruns to Col d' Aubisque / Tourmalet / Aspin. The Pic Du Midi cable car journey to a summit near the Tourmalet is a good do too.

My other fave is "The Tossa Road" (snig..) Saint Feliux - Tossa - Lloret De Mar. Crazy cliff top shenanigans.

1st time we went was in may. Boiling, Pamplona was 37C. Leathers got strapped to the back after that. When it does rain though it thrashes down. Golf ball hail last year. It hurts.

F1 tho'? Feckin' posho.

Edited post to paint a better picture of THAT M/way. Just of the boat and you get a mental road like that to play on....enjoy!

A favoured route from the Costa del Sol heading to Portugal would be via Sevilla. In that way you can enjoy the Ronda Road. If not via Sevilla you can cut across to Jerez and take in Cadiz perhaps?

I live on Costa del Sol and happy to offer pointers if need be.

P.s.

Landing in Santander you have some ace biking country before getting anywhere Barcelona, but I guess you already know that. Enjoy the trip.

One other thing, we were thinking about the Portsmouth- Santander ferry, however the tickets for the two of us with bike are looking to be over 700 pounds.
I know this is a 24h crossing but... well... that's a lot of money...

Are there any other options to getting to Spain which would be a bit cheaper (excluding planes and riding through France)
