it was working fine this morning and then when i tried to start it this afternoon it wouldn't start. I had to bump start and went easy 1st time and checked batteries after getting home and they're holding good enough charge. It hasn't been dropped or anything since this morning, just sat on the drive. all lights/dashboard/switches work, just the starter button when pressed dosen't even crank... nothing
(obviously made sure it was in neutral and kickstand up, clutch in, kill switch etc) just wondering what it could be. ie. wires pulled lose/touching, clutch contact button buggered, maybe bad battery but it was replaced only recently so should be fine as well as the fact the volt meter reading 13.6 - 14.3 fuses blown?? any help appreciated, ta! oh yeh, don't know if it helps but it's an sv 650 1999 model Last edited by street racer; 08-04-11 at 11:33 PM. |

If the lights don't dim when you press the button then the battery is probably not the problem.
Is the neutral switch lit? if yes try raising the side stand. If still no luck you will need to check the clutch switch. Then the cutout switch on the right hand switch cluster. Do you have an alarm/immobilizer fitted? Regards Dave |

Okay so the
-Lights don't dim when the buttons pressed -neutral light's on -side stands definitely up -checked the wires of switch cluster seemed aright and kill switch was for sure, off. - and no immobilizer is fitted = no crank To be sure, is the clutch switch the two prongs that clip in?? (if so tryed by-passing that by paper clip but had no luck... |

Right, may be best to start at the starter end. The starter is operated when the start relay is energized, ( its the big relay under the front seat) It has a main fuse check this is OK. There should be a spare there too) If it is use a piece of wire (with an in line fuse for safety) to connect the +ve side of the battery to the green/yellow wire on the relay. This will bring in the relay and operate the starter. Be careful not to short this wire to earth or touch any other wires.
If the starter does not operate then listen for a click when you touch the wire on the green/yellow. If the relay does click then the starter is suspect. If it does not then then relay is suspect. In this case first check the black/white earth wire is Ok going to the relay. If we have success with the starter operating then the next test will be to connect a wire from the +ve of the battery (use a wire with an in line fuse for safety) and touch it in turn on each of the two the wires going to the clutch switch, (you can remove the wires from the switch) the starter should operate on one of the wires. If it does not operate then it is the green/yellow wire that goes from this switch to the start relay that is broken. Do the above tests with the ignition off and the cut out switch on the right handlebar in the off position. Let me know what the results are and if still no luck we can test further. I had the same problem two weeks ago and checked everything in turn working from the battery back to the switches and in the end it was corrosion on the terminals in the yellow block conector under the tank.
