Hi there,
The MOT guy gave me an advisory of play in the shock bearing on my K5 so I had a look-see. With the bike on a stand the SA could be lifted about 1mm at the axle. Most of the play was in the center cush bearing with some in the back shock bearing. The spacers had a little shine on one side but my vernier couldn't measure the wear. Lube wasn't an issue. So I moved the spacers round a bit and re-greased and the play reduced to about 0.5mm. I was wondering what I should be shooting for. The manual is of no help. Is zero play the target or is some play normal. The other thing that I noticed was that the front cush bearing was a bit sloppy and may be rotating on the bolt rather than the spacer. Haven't yet dismantled it cos the center stand uses that bolt. Do I need to look at wedging the gap at each end of the spacer with thicker washers or is there a better solution. Wemoto does a re-build kit (6 bearings 3 spacers). Don't we need 4 spacers ? http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Suzuki/S...e_Rebuild_Kit/ Thanks. |

It seems to be front bearing that attaches to frame that goes first. Zero play would be ideal but 0.5mm or so probably won't be noticed.

The bearing spacer and the two washers are fitted between two lugs on the frame. Unless the washers are a clearance fit and the frame lugs are maleable (ie: it can be squashed in) the clamping force of the bolt will not hold the spacer rigid to the frame. So the whole thing will waggle about on the bolt. How's it spossed to work ? I must be missing something here. |

It does not matter if it has axial play, shock only cares about going up and down.

Ah right, I see what you mean. For that it relies on the washers taking up most of the gap and the frame lugs flexing in slightly to clamp it in place.
By the way don't ever fit that without the washers as missing them has been known to snap the lugs.
