Default Building a trackday SV. General questions.

Hello people.

Me and another (not quite as sexy) organ will soon be picking up our future shared trackbike which at the moment is a standard curvy. It'll be road worthy-ish so it can be insured and tested so we don't waste track time bedding in brakes or more importantly finding faults. We're hoping to do it on a bit of a budget but ending up with a reasonable nice fun track bike.

I'd like some answers to a few of our general questions please from those in the know.

Front suspension:
The plan at the moment is to go down the H**ley emulator and correct spring route so as to avoid the cost and pain of finding good parts for a GSXR (or other) front end conversion.

Is this a good plan?

Has it been done enough times to make it a solid, reliable solution?

Forgive my naivety but if we fit the emulators does that mean the forks won't be externally adjustable apart from for pre-load?

Rear suspension:
We were going to get a standard shock from another bike although so many have been fitted across the years I haven't got a clue where to start. We are both around 14 stone without gear.

Is there a standard shock from another bike which is ideal for track use which should suit as is without a spring change?

Is there anything else to do with bouncy bits we should consider?

Plastics:
After looking around on here I've seen that anything can be fitted from a Daytona 675 to an SP1.

Are race fairings the way to go or can standard be as good?

Is there a generally accepted specific model of a bike's fairing that goes on easier than others without too much fettling?

Engine and airflow:
We're not too fussed about trying to improve power and don't particularly want to dynojet the carbs. The bike will have some sort of fruity end can on it for aesthetics and sound if nothing else.

Is there anything of reasonable budget that we should consider to get a noticeable gain whilst keeping the engine/fuelling reliable? (I think I recall a simple airbox mod).

Tyres:
Obviously a massive opinion thing but what are considered to be good trackday tyres for longevity without compromising grip?

I know SVs can have a few tyre sizes fitted so is there an advantage in any particular size over others for track riding?

Gearing:
We'll probably be trying a few different tracks including Silverstone, Brands Indy, Mallory Park, Cadwell Park and hopefully Rockingham.

Is a simple tooth down on the front on the standard chain going to make a worthwhile difference?

Brakes:
I haven't got a clue but the other organ says Chewy's bits sell a GSXR conversion bracket.

Is it worth doing or can well maintained standard brakes stop us quickly enough? Pads will be changed for more suitable ones.

Other things we already know of and we will probably do are the R6 throttle tube and the TRE mod. We'll also either buy rearsets or get something made up or buy hanger brackets to move the standard peg hangers.

Is there anything else we should think about doing?

As it stands the bike needs a bit of work to get it on the road including a cylinder change and full service including valve clearances and carb strip/check/clean/balance. Also we are going to strip the brakes, check and test the charging system, check bearings etc.

Please, if you don't know your onions don't reply with hearsay or stuff you may have overheard in the local bike shop/pub/discotheque/ladies toilets which may or may not be good advice. It'll only start bickering which I'm not here to read and will encourage the wrath of the monkey.

Articulate, thought about answers will be rewarded with topless photographs of my girlfriend. If you haven't met her she is on here by the name of Bear.

Thanks in advance. (Wish us luck).

I'd say go down the minitwin spec route.

Rear shock, I'd say go with the 04-05 zx10r unit or fit a 06 zx10r shock with the curvy spring. Failing that Penske, ohlins etc..

Brakes Just give the standard ones a good service and stick the braided lines on.

Bodywork GSXR fairings seem to be the easiest to fit or run it nekkid

I wouldn't mind the naked route but the other one wants it to look pretty and is scared of looking like a freakish giant.

here's what a couple of the fairings look like. I'm going through my photobucket for the minitwin fairings

Triumph 675 (the quality of the fairing was s***)

Cheers. I've got a GSXR fairing in the garage which we could tart up. It's not the best quality but it's a start.

H*rley emulators are as good as racetech. They are OK and lots of races been won with similar kit. Cartridge conversion is better, GSXR forks with revalve are same but with better brakes.

Keep stock calipers unless using GSXR forks also.

For rear I would go with penske, anything else will probably need modifying in valving and/or for more ride height. Find a used one from SRAD for cheap.
Everything from stock bikes except for revalved and sprung SRAD one will leave you short of ride height.

Tyres, supercorsa scrubs or similar. Worth having wets on wheels.

Airbox mods, no. You can cut middle out of air filter, but for gains it is not worthwhile unless you are going to find full exhaust. Whatever you do here will need rejet.

Rest of it, cut off everything you don't need. Race loom is easy to make to save weight and complexity. I wouldn't bother with fairings or whatever, maybe a bit of a numberboard to keep the wind off your head.

End of the day you can have a lot of fun on a near stock one.
