Default Grooves in wheel spacer

On popping the rear wheel in and out recently ive noticed there are grooves around the rear wheel spacer on both sides on the outside of the spacer where it goes through the dust cover on the rear wheel.

This seems a little strange to me (thought the seal cover would get chewed up first). Has anyone else seen anything like this? and would you think it could be an issue? bearings feel fine.
