VFR800 V-Tech Advice Please

Hi guys

Brother in law is looking to get his first bike now he has passed his Direct Access and has seen this (told him he ain't coming out with me on it ):

Anything to look out for from our current and ex-VFR owners and all other forum gurus??

The mileage obviously jumps out as pretty low for an 8 yr old VFR so I've told him to make sure it is genuine via the FSH and MOTs and that it ain't had new clocks etc.

And my opinion is your b-in-law is a very lucky fella getting something like that as his first bike! A lot of motosickle.

Its an early one so apparently the vtec is more intrusive. The 15,000 mile service is v.expensive (linked brakes don't help either), but that one has many fun times till the owner needs to worry about that.

Solid, quality bikes. Budget in the price of some pipes as they NEED them. One of the best sounding bikes on the road after. Staintunes or quad Lasers are the dawgs' bawz.

Looks a bit scruffy round the pegs, maybe it has not been properly cleaned by the dealer. I would check that the remote pre-load adjuster works as it may have seized. Make sure it has the tool kit with the special "C" spanner to adjust the chain. Probably still young enough to not have been hacked with a flatblade screwdriver.
Its also only a few hundred miles till its due a minor service. Summit to haggle on? There is loads of them for sale so I would not hurry.

TBH this about covers it. The VTEC is a bit more 'jerky' on early models and he might find that un-nerving as a new rider. He also needs to make sure that the Starter Valves have been properly synchronised by the servicing dealer as this smooths out a jerky low speed throttle response which again can un-nerve a new rider. It would be a shame if he lost confidence in the bike due to these issues.

I think Y-C has a valid point, but if he trusts himself to handle it a VFR (of any type) is a doddle to ride gently and learn the ropes on. My first bike was a VFR750FV but I cried every time I dropped it (x3) and crashed it (x3). They are expensive to repair so something to consider for a new rider.

Cheers Mike, I'm going with him so I'll make sure to cover these points and all the others covered. I'm sure he'll be out on a few rides this year once he's sorted something and had some gentle practice runs!
