Default Ive filled the bike with Synthetic 5w/40 oil ok?

As it says, ive got to run in the bike after the rebuild, it's been recommended to change it after 50 miles to get rid of any residue/metal from the rebuild.

Is it going to be ok? as the threads in here say to use 10w/40! (so does the manual)

if its car oil then NO.

if its bike oil then YES.

depends in what you mean by 'running in' is it new rings or gearbox or a whole new engine?

Aye, did you reuse rings and barrels or what?
If yes then you are not "running in" per se.

Bit of a shame to dump it, I use cheap stuff for first 20 mile or so shakedown.

Safe way is to change it but you don't 100% need to, as you're not running in fresh rings.

if its a whole new gearbox then i would say a bit more than 50 miles to let them get polished a bit better. the filter will deal with all the crap.

i'd be inclined to leave it in for 200 miles, then dump oil and a new filter. 5w-40 has just a larger heat range which in turn makes it a wee bit thinner so don't worry about it.

Well... it's a gearbox off ebay so it's already been 'used'.... im not too concerned if i need to buy another load of oil it's not like ive made the mistake of buying the wrong thing or something i dont need before. This whole job of repairing my engine has been exactly that part of the way already mate!

Maybe it's just me mollycodling the machine due to the amount of work ive done and now im going to be over-protective just in case.

if a manual says 10w40, then you cross reference here and it says the same.....why the hell would you put something else in????
